Kansas hidden gems: abilene and smoky valley train

Two words: Train Ride! Who would’ve thought? Located in Abilene, KS, this charming adventure was an excellent surprise for my husband’s birthday, even though I’m not usually a big fan of trains. The round trip to Emporia, KS, offers a unique experience, although it’s worth noting that each leg of the trip takes approximately 20-25 minutes. Once in Emporia, there’s a 30-minute layover where you can explore a flour mill and store.

A couple of things to keep in mind: the train moves at about 5 miles per hour, so it’s a very leisurely pace. Spending two hours on a slow-moving train might be a bit challenging for some, but it’s a great way to relax and enjoy the scenery.

📌 Driving time is about 2:15 from Kansas City and Hays, 90 minutes from Lawrence and Wichita, and about 30-40 minutes from Manhattan/Junction City/Ft Riley and Salina.

⭐️Overall rating: 7/10: Although it was an excellent experience, I definitely think it's a one-time thing for me. My husband, on the other hand, might have a different opinion. I have to admit that on the way back from Emporia, I even fell asleep due to it not capturing my attention. If you're an avid train enthusiast, I think you'll find it a great idea and thoroughly enjoyable.

-You can purchase drinks in the depot before the train leaves. The only thing in Enterprise is the grist mill. You can purchase fresh flour, corn meal, gift baskets and drinks there. Then the train goes back.
