This Trail Will Make You Forget You're In Kansas

The Horsethief Canyon Trail Network is a network of Hiking, Biking and Horseback riding trails located in Kanopolis Lake State Park totalling up to about 7 miles. It is one of the top hiking trails in the state of Kansas. There are Three Trails in the network, Horsethief Canyon Trail, Buffalo Track Canyon Trail, and the Rockin' K trail. The trail network gets its name from the area's former use by outlaws to escape with stolen horses, as well as the buffalo bison that used to roam there. The trails pass through multiple different terrains and include steep climbs and a few challenging water crossings and treks through tall grasslands.

The views are amazing, Sandstone rock formations, caves, canyons, yucas everywhere, you'll completely forget you're in kansas.

Do plan to wear protective clothing, sunscreen, and insect repellant, there are no trash cans along the trails. This is a moderately difficult trail I would not bring small children or people with mobility struggles. The area is day use only and we happily ignored that and spent the night in the tent surrounded by screaming foxes and coyotes. If you've ever heard a fox scream, you know it had our skin crawling! I Do not recommend breaking that rule, however, do get there at sunrise and the view on the first bluff of the purple trail will blow you away!

(those are not petroglyphs pictured, those are the carvings and initials of hikers who have visited the canyon, the sandstone is constantly eroding and making them look old, you can find petroglyphs nearby at the faris caves but you can't touch them)
