10 habits I'm developing at 30 to avoid regret at 40

•No more alcohol

Okay, full transparency—my intention for this is no alcohol for one year. I don't like to drink much anymore as it is, but no matter what way you spin it alcohol is not beneficial for health. It is a carcinogen and neurotoxin and contributes to many illnesses. I know and understand that this is going to trigger a lot of individuals who will have every excuse in the book (trust me, I've been there), but at the end of the day it's bad for health. I can do a deep dive into this topic in the future if it's a topic of interest.

•A year to work on myself and heal—no dating, no hookups

I recently went through a really hard breakup that I'm still processing. I've decided that I'm going to take the next 365 days to work on and better myself. I've been dating since I was a teenager and have always jumped from relationship to relationship without turning inward and wondering what I may be doing that's contributing to a failed relationship OR attracting a certain type. This also inspired my no alcohol goal, as I've leaned on it a little too hard in the past during breakups or as a catalyst to backslide. I need to be fully control & present during the next year to process and heal my trauma and turn up as my best self in my future relationship. You gotta "feel it to heal it" and numbing out feelings or shoving them down would only cause me and my future self harm by ignoring the deep rooted issues.

•Setting financial goals

I've never been very good at making financial goals or saving. However, it's time for me to start taking finances seriously and set some goals. My first goal is to save up 10k and then throw as much money towards my student loan debt as possible so I can pay them off ASAP. I always had the mindset of "I'll pay them down the road" but I really want to be debt free by the time I'm 35 (and definitely 40). Having this new mindset will hopefully help me avoid financial stress later in life.

•Work and reflect on emotional triggers

As I mentioned above, I recently went through a breakup. I'm taking this as an opportunity to reflect and take a deeper look at my emotional triggers and emotional responses/reactivity to situations. This applies to ALL of the relationships in my life. How am I showing up? Am I responding to things in the moment that I later regret? Working on patience also ties into this part as well. Practicing patience now will only benefit me in the future.

•Strength training

The past few years I've focused on simply moving my body—a lot of walking and stretching/yoga. I lost 10 lbs at the start of this routine simply by walking after meals 3x a day. I now walk at least 1 mile a day in the winter and 2-3 miles easily in the summer. I also stretch/do light yoga every night for 15-20 minutes. However, MUSCLE is the organ of longevity (look into Dr. Gabrielle Lyon for everything on muscle centric medicine). Therefore, I've made it my goal to start strength training and building muscle to set myself up for a long healthy life.

•Journaling daily

I know that "morning pages" are very popular and many people really enjoy adding this into their daily routine. My journaling is more of a "nightly brain dump" where I write whatever is on my mind before I go to bed. It ends up taking about 45-60 minutes, but I'm sleeping better now than I have in a long time. I'm able to get everything out of my head and onto paper so when my head hits the pillow I'm not tossing and turning about a million things because I already got most of them out. I know it sounds like a lot of time, but as someone who has always had difficulty falling asleep due to a racing mind—this has been a total game changer.

•Gratitude daily

Before my feet even hit the ground in the morning I am saying everything I'm grateful for. You can do this by getting a gratitude journal and writing things down, saying them out loud or just saying them in your head. I run through everything in my head while I'm in bed, before I look at my phone or get moving. Life looks a lot better each day when you can reflect and already appreciate everything in your life that you're grateful for.

•Be radically present

I've been working on this one for a while now but never really fully surrendered to what this looks like. For me, I actually need to take inventory of what is taking up a lot of my time each day which ended up being Instagram and Facebook. I deactivated my personal Facebook and Instagram page, keeping my business accounts but deleted the apps off of my phone. How can I be present if I'm always checking these apps and comparing myself to people I know and where I think I should be. Instead, I should be focusing on myself and where I am at, and how to get where I want to be, without all of the external chatter and comparison. I have replaced a bit of that time with Lemon8 and Pinterest, but it's not nearly the same since I am not emotionally invested in either of these like I am with Instagram & Facebook. This also includes watching significantly less TV and using that time to read or do other things that keep me in the moment rather than distracted and disassociated.

•Prioritize my health

All of the things I've mentioned above are helping my health mentally or physically. However, this goes much much deeper than working out and setting goals. It's about nourishing my body & soul. Going DEEPER. Eating enough protein and balancing my blood sugar. Working on my gallbladder and liver health. Detoxing my body from toxic mold and parasites. It means castor oil packs, coffee enemas, gallbladder & liver flushes, working with an acupuncturist, naturopath and other healthcare practitioners that focus on getting to the root cause of your health problems and overcoming them. I've been in my own healing journey for years and have learned and healed my body so much already. It's what inspired me to get a Master's in Clinical Nutrition and become a nutritionist and health coach. It's my passion to help others radically transform their health and improve their lives, just like I've done and continue to do.

•Grow my online nutrition & health coaching business

This ties into my financial goals a bit but was deserving of its own section. My nutrition business is still very much in its infancy and has nowhere to go but up. My goal is to one day be self-sustaining via my business while simultaneously improving people's lives. I've DIYed my way through starting it from scratch, from filing the legal documents, creating my website, launching my social media and searching for/working with clients. The truth of it is, is that people are no longer living longer—we are dying longer. My goal with my practice is to help people thrive and LIVE rather than suffer with chronic illness and problems that may be able to be tackled from another POV than bandaid-style treatments. I can't wait to see where it is by the time I'm 40!
