So unlike a lot of my peers, I opted to enrol for a part-time degree instead of a full-time one. I’m holding down a full-time job at the same time. If you’re weighing your options, I hope this gives you a little insight, but do take it with a pinch of salt 🧂 Anyway, here’s why I chose this path:
🤎 YOU NEED 2 YEARS OF WORKING EXPERIENCE TO ENROL INTO PART-TIME LOCAL UNIVERSITY.
Yes.. that’s right. You’ll be accepted for interviews, but you’re very unlikely to enter. That means you’ll have less $ for 2 years before pursuing your degree. I wanted to complete my degree ASAP, thus I chose the latter.
🤍 I CAN PAY FOR MY OWN SCHOOL FEES
This is something personal, but it was really important for me to be able to pay for this on my own- and pay it off quick. Working a full-time job allowed me to do so comfortably, and it was stable too.
🕰️ MORE WORK EXPERIENCE
One thing I noticed when applying for jobs was that employers are REALLY interested to see your work experience AND portfolio. I took on internships and freelance roles to prepare myself for my first full-time job, without having a degree when I first applied.
✨ CAREER SWITCH
If I wanted to go for local university, I could only go for the course that I took during my diploma… haha… so that was a no. Also, it’s not that big of a monetary difference when you just start out. (Of course promotion is a separate thing, which is why I still want my degree)
💰 FINANCIAL FREEDOM
To be able to balance the crazy work schedules that I have, I had to look hard for a job that was understanding towards my school as well. But adult money just hits different LOL
🎓 GRADUATE QUICKER
For most (or all) private universities, the timeline to graduate is around 1-2 years (but this also depends on the number of modules you take per semester.) If I had gone for full-time local university, it’d take me 4 years. By doing this part-time, I’ll be able to graduate at 22, with 3 years of work experience.
💔 DOWNSIDE:
VERY BUSY, no social life… at all. Really be prepared for the stress, surround yourself with friends, colleagues and a boss that understands. It’s going to be a lot of late nights and you’ll definitely fall sick/be stressed/ exhausted if you dont manage your work properly. (Especially sem 1 will be really tough)
These are just some things to consider! It’s honestly just a degree, and wherever you end up, you’ll do fine. It’s really just a certificate after all. Happy to answer any questions! <3
