I always wanted to get my driving license, so I immediately enrolled once I turned 18! I got my license during Covid period, here’s my experience and advice based on memory.

Before:

• Download the CDC app, you’re able to set up and apply for your PDL (Learner’s License) before you turn 18. Don’t do it too quickly though, it expires in a year and you have to renew it again for $15. I had to renew mine once since it was covid period my journey took wayy longer.

• Ask around for recommendations if you’re looking to get a private instructor. It’s so important to find a good one, my instructor fell asleep a few times during our lessons 😭

• Groom yourself well during the first couple visits during registration as that is when they take your license photo. I remember mine was like a SURPRISE and now I’m stuck with a photo I hate….

• To save money, if you’re going by private, book your driving sessions after passing your BTT & FTT. That way you’re able to smoothly complete your driving/circuit sessions and take your TP test with fresh knowledge.

During:

• Do not buy the books, just download the TP Test app and you’ll be able to do your BTT and FTT practice test anytime and anywhere you want. Just memorise and understand the questions and answers, you’ll be fine.

• You book your BTT and FTT tests through the CDC app, look out for timings that states ‘computer’ or ‘pen and paper’. Not sure if they still have this option but, they did during covid. The computer option allows you to know your results immediately, while the pen and paper takes days to know the results via call/text/mail.

• Your driving simulator can be booked on the same day, which means - no need travel twice. If I remember correctly, you need to complete 3 before you’re able to book for your actual TP test. You don’t have to pass the simulators, you just need to go through it, so don’t worry.

• You also book your TP test through the CDC app, I think 9am - 11am is the timing that they refresh slots, so log in and out during that timing to snatch your desired slot.

After:

• Driving inside the circuit and outside on the road is so different. The driving methods you learn in the circuit is no longer relevant. Outside on the road, every mall/carpark/road has different spaces and rules, apply the concepts you learned but don’t literally do the same thing that you did while getting your license.

Tips:

• The best advice my father gave me, which helped me pass my TP Test was, ‘if your side mirror has passed the curb, you’re safe to turn’. This rule applies everywhere for me, during a right turn, during a u-turn, when exiting a parking lot and it also applies for any car I’ve driven. Love it.

• Trust your instincts. Really… don’t panic and overreact on your steering wheel. Take your time to turn slowly and see your spacial allowance, when it’s time to react fast, react fast.

• Eyes on the road. I mean literally haha, after a while you get used to it. You no longer need to look at the side mirrors to ensure that you are within lanes. Every car you drive, eyes on the road, you’ll be able to roughly gauge how the head of your car looks like when you’re within the lane and when you’re outside of the lane.

Whether you have access to a car or not, I think it’s beneficial to get your license as it is an added skill + it opens up more opportunities (jobs that requires license etc) you’ll never know when it’ll come in handy.
