[Recos & Reviews] I tried Sagye so you don’t have to.

We had always wanted to try Sagye, but our plans were usually foiled by the long waiting list . Despite having gone early at around 5:30pm on a Friday, we saw crowds already forming outside the restaurant.

Unfortunately, the restaurant does not accept reservations, so please head down early to secure your slots.

Every sotbap is served as a set meal comprising a soup of the day-we had seaweed soup! Do let the staff know on your preferred choice of rice to accompany your sotbap with. There are Japanese Rice, Five Grain Rice, and Japanese Rice with Sweet Potatoes and Gingko Nuts to choose from!

What we tried:

1. Beef Short Rib Sotbap

💰 Price: $34.80

👉🏻The short ribs were thick, tender and chewy, but the beef flavour fell slightly short. It was lacking the punch. Changing to five grain rice (recommend!) added a variety of taste to the dish

Rating ⭐️: 7.5/10

2. Spicy chicken with cheese sotbap

💰 Price: $23.80

👉🏻 The sauce poured over sotbap was a little spicy and gave the dish a robust flavour profile. It reminds me a little of yoogane’s Dak-galbi. Probably because of the cheese, this meal can be quite filling.

Rating⭐️:7.5/10

3. Kimchi Pancake

💰 Price:$24

👉🏻 pancake was thick and extremely crispy but lack the spiciness from the kimchi. While it was dish was fairly delicious, we find the price of the kimchi pancake to be an expensive.

Rating⭐️:8.5/10

🧐Verdict: Slightly overhyped and expensive. Worth the try but only if there is no queue.

Towards the end of your meal, do remember to let the staff know that you would like hot barley tea to be poured over the crispy rice at the bottom. Close the pot lid and wait for a few minutes to enjoy a bowl of Nurungji that promotes digestion.
