coming from someone that had 0 calf muscles, this standing calf raises exercise is #MyGoTo in achieving my baby calf muscles 🥹 my gym does not have a calf raise machine so this is a good alternative to that!

🍋 FOR BEGINNERS

if you are just starting out this movement, you might want to try it without the smith machine first! do it only with your body weight! once you familiarise yourself with the movement and know how to activate the muscles, then you can move on to doing it weighted! this is also to prevent potential injuries etc.

⭐️ FOR ADVANCED

once you feel comfortable with standing calf raises, you can proceed to use the smith machine! the smith machine can help you effectively add weight while allowing you to keep a greater range of motion.

🦿 get a step-up or a plate so that you can be up a few inches off the ground and your ankle can descend without the floor getting in the way

🦿 position the barbell on your back as if you were doing a barbell back squat, and step up with the top 1/3 of your foot on the plate

🦿 with a straight leg, push off with the balls of your feet, and unlatch the barbell

🦿let your heel drop down until you feel the stretch and push back up with the balls of your feet

🦿 squeeze your upper calf on the way up and hold at the top of the movement for 2 seconds before dropping your heels back down
