I spent a week in the French Riviera & here is where to go and what Iβd give a miss.
- I visited almost every main town on the Riviera including Monaco, but since itβs officially another country, Iβll do another post on it.
*Also, the South of France is a broader area than the French Riviera, but Iβm only covering the Riviera in this post as itβs what us tourists normally mean when we refer to the South of France.
π/π: Cannes, Villefranche Sur Mer, Menton
- I heard from others that Cannes is extremely overrated but I cannot disagree more. Itβs one of the few places with sandy beaches ποΈ instead of pebbled beaches. There is amazing shopping ποΈ and Iβm not talking about just luxury goods. There are amazing restaurants and viewpoints. The Cannes croisette is stunning & I could not recommend it more. I went during the Cannes Film festival so that added to the atmosphere too but I believe it would be great at any time.
- Villefranche was the prettiest town tied with Menton. One thing I would say is that I wish there was more variety of things to do. There are some really nice shops and restaurants, but Iβd highly recommend spending more time in Menton as it feels more like a proper town with a much larger variety of shops. Villefranche is more for chilling with a view imo.
Check out my related post on the top 3 beaches in the French Riviera.
9οΈβ£/π: Eze
Eze is a stunning medieval looking town. I highly recommend going to the garden at the top. Itβs around 7 euros per person but so worth it. I didnβt rank this the highest as the town feels very inauthentic for some reason. The overpriced boutiques in every lane feel very out of place and itβs kind of hard to navigate. Iβd recommend just going to the garden and walking around for a bit to get a vibe of the place. The food was quite expensive here too.
8οΈβ£/π St Jean Cap Ferrat
SJCF was really worth visiting. You have the iconic Rothschild villa and one of the most beautiful beaches in the Riviera, Paloma beach. Iβd recommend going to both places.
7οΈβ£/π: Nice, Cap dβail
Nice is where I based myself for 5 nights out of the week. The other 2 were spent in Cannes as Cannes is a little further out on the train line.
Nice felt most like normal place where locals live. I mean obviously locals live in all these other towns too, but this is the least touristy. There are so many malls and cheap food options. I would recommend basing yourself near the train station so that you can easily take day trips everywhere else. People always say not to live near the train stations in France, but I didnβt find it unsafe personally and we were all women on the trip. I think that tip would apply more to cities like Paris or Marseille but not so much in the Riviera.
The reason Iβve given it a 7, is that I donβt think itβs worth visiting in and of itself. Itβs not that pretty in comparison to the other towns and just serves as a good base. However, train π is so convenient that I donβt think living in any other town would be a huge deal? They are all a few min away from each other.
Cap dβail is beautiful but thereβs only really a famous beach and restaurant there so Iβd give it a miss if I was short on time.
6οΈβ£/π: Antibes
I would probably skip Antibes or do more research on whatβs there. I must admit I might be biased as it was really cloudy when I went so that dampened my mood. Thereβs a Picasso museum here which was closed when I went but it looks really interesting. I had my fill of museums from Paris already though. The farmers market here was great as well and I bought the best wine ever but these pop up all around the riviera all the time so itβs not exclusive to Antibes. Thereβs also a stunning beach called Billionaireβs Bay which I didnβt manage to visit. I heard itβs quite a walk and not the most accessible.
Others: Grasse, Beaulieu Sur Mer - Did not visit long enough to judge but there isnβt a lot to do at either place.
