Next time you’re traveling to New York, check out one of the best hidden gems in Brooklyn at The Green-Wood Cemetery in Sunset Park.

Established in 1838, this cemetery attracted Victorian-era New Yorkers as a park and inspired the creation of Central Park! At the time, it was in the top 3 tourist attractions in the United States!

Once you visit, you’ll understand why, here’s a few tips for visiting:

Enter through the Main Entrance at 5th Avenue & 25th Street & Pick up a map (there are restrooms here too)

They are open 365 days but close at 5 PM and 6 PM seasonally

You can’t bring pets or anything like scooters/bikes/rollerblades

No picnics allowed

Give yourself 2 hours to explore the pathways and get lost on the little winding footpaths and roads!

Lookout for the green parakeets who live in the Gothic Main Entrance Gate!

Join a trolley tour of the cemetery or an evening tour which includes the Catacombs! These need to be booked in advance!

Hungry? In the am check out Baked in Brooklyn, in the afternoon check out The Astarita for pizza or Chilo’s for tacos!

Points of interest:

Minerva Statue: the goddess of war statue that faces and waves to the Statue of Liberty on Battle Hill
