Korean cuisine has a special place in my heart and stomach. The combination of spicy, sweet and sour flavours in the assortment of Korean dishes and appetisers always leaves me craving more. As such, when I do find a place that serves amazing Korean food, I HAVE to recommend it to you guys!

SBCD Soontofu House is one of those places - serving tofu soup, a simple dish yet packed full of flavour! Soontofu is one of my comfort foods - nourishing, hearty, flavourful. The SBCD soontofu takes it one step further with silken tofu that’s made daily, simmering in a broth that’s boiled for three days.

Whenever I visit, I will order the combo set meals as they’re cheaper than just ordering ala carte. Despite the hefty price, ($20-40), these combo meals can feed two, so it’s actually affordable!

You also get access to free flow sides, a privilege which we thoroughly abused.

🫕 The appetisers-

Are you truly Singaporean if you don’t love freebies? Not only do you get a free set of appetisers, it’s also free flow here! Slay! Each person gets a set of four appetisers - Preserved cucumber, Kimchi, Marinated Squid, and Seaweed. My personal favourite is the Marinated Squid - which is marinated in a sauce that reminds me of appetiser dishes that you can get before a wedding reception - which I super love!

You also get a free fried Yellowtail fish - $4 on the menu. I am not embarrassed to say this, but this is my favourite item on the menu! Freshly fried and slightly salty, the fish is crispy on the outside and yet still flaky and soft on the inside. A simple dish for sure, but its what gets me salivating and ready for the main course!

🍱 The Combo Meal -

With each combo set, you get a main dish, a soontofu soup, and a hot stone rice. Prices vary depending on the main dish that you choose. We chose the new dish on the menu - Pollack! Pollack is a type of fish, and the korean rendition is dried during the winter months to produce an intense flavour!

The pollack is served on a hotplate, like all their mains. Portions of the main dishes are always huge - these combo meals are definitely meant to be shared between two people. I’ve never had pollack, so this was a good place to start- the fish was a little chewy in texture, reminding me a little of the texture of shark or stingray. It had a distinct grilled smokiness, and the sauce was a little more sweet than spicy. By the end, it got a little jelak - perhaps it could even be a set meal shared among three people instead. I wouldn’t say that I didn’t like it - it was a well cooked, delicious plate of fish, just perhaps portions were disproportionate.

🍲 The Soontofu -

The soontofu came in a small claypot, and we ordered the “assorted” spicy soup. You can choose for a less spicy, or more spicy version of the soup. The signature dish of the restaurant, the handmade tofu was heavenly! Soft and silky and almost watery in texture, I loved it. Unfortunately, the portion size was too small and it left me wanting more. But that doesn’t mean that they skimped on the ingredients though- In the soup was half a tiny soft-shell crab, minced meat, tofu, and a raw egg. The soup base was hearty and rich, and if you like budajigae and any other gochujang/kimchi based soup, you’d like this!

🍚 Hot Stone Rice -

You wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the hotstone rice and a normal bowl of rice at SBCD. We ordered an extra bowl of rice just to figure out the difference - the hotstone rice is softer, wetter, and slightly, marginally, (i may be imagining it) sweeter. I personally prefer the hot stone rice for that readon, but you can get by with just ordering the normal rice.

The total bill came up to about 65 dollars - but we were extremely stuffed after, and we thought it was a meal worth the price. Good quality, large portions, totally worth it!

Do note though, service is a little slow, and they always seem to be overwhelmed, but customer service was still thorough. Just be prepared to wait if you go on a weekend! Make a resrevation! It’s not my first time at SBCD, and I’ll defnitely be back!

If you’re looking for a cheaper korean restaurant, the same restaurant has also opened kopitiam outlets - serving cheaper versions of their star dish! I’ve never tired it yet, so let me know if you have! There are outlets at Ang Mo Kio, Punggol and at Woodlands!

📍SBCD Korean Tofu House - outlets at Tanjong Pagar, Millenia Walk, Alexandra Retail Centre.
