😋 Hands down my favourite cafe in JB...

There are so so so many cafes to visit in JB that I have analysis paralysis when looking at my google maps wishlist. Quarterly visits to JB have allowed my boyfriend and I to visit several of those cafes, so here are the reviews of 5 of them that we got to try >>>

Keijometo ⭐⭐⭐⭐

First up will definitely have to be the famous cafe for all matcha lovers. It has an industrial aesthetic and lovely instagrammable spots around the exterior.

🥪 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐤𝐨 𝐓𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨 𝐑𝐌𝟐𝟎

The torched mentaiko spread had a slight smoky note with a creamy and rich flavour when you bite into the soft white bread. MY FAVOURITE THING TO ORDER HERE...I'm salivating just thinking about it now...

🍙 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐳𝐮𝐤𝐞 𝐑𝐌𝟑𝟎

A well-baked salmon fillet, with crispy skin and meat retaining some moisture. Adding the yuri matcha dashi to the salmon and rice brings a different flavour profile to the dish. I recommend not adding it all in one go as it might become too intense and bitter.

🍵 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐚 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐌𝟏𝟕

Super refreshing drink. Perfect for people who are matcha beginners or prefer milder matcha flavour.

Principle Cafe by T.A.M Jalan Trus ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Spoiler alert: This is my favourite cafe in JB so far, though it is pretty pricey.

🥣 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜 & 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐲 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐑𝐌𝟏𝟖

A satisfying bowl of mushroom soup where the blended and aromatic mushroom stood out, not the basic mushroom extract type.

🍝 𝐒𝐦𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐞𝐟 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚 𝐑𝐌𝟑𝟔.𝟗𝟎

There was a generous amount of beef brisket in the pasta and the flavors combined well. I liked the use of grana padamo cheese which cuts the smokey note of the dish. Mouth-wateringly good!

🍹 𝐘𝐮𝐳𝐮 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐚 𝐑𝐌𝟏𝟔

A refreshing drink, with well-balanced sweet and sour notes.

Dusk by Mok Mok ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

Another close contestant for my favourite cafe.

🦐 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐨 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐧 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐨

The arborio rice grains were firm, creamy and chewy. The high starch content provided a starchy taste and blended well with the miso. The prawns were sadly a miss, as despite being big and peeled they were dry and not well-seasoned.

🦪 𝐙𝐚𝐫𝐮 𝐒𝐨𝐛𝐚 𝐑𝐌𝟓𝟐

Served with salmon and scallops with ikura, it was a delight to enjoy the seafood that had no fishiness. The egg yolk elevated the dish by adding thickness and creaminess. Hot soba broth was also included, so you could add it to the dish to enjoy the soba warm. I like the option to enjoy the dish both cold and/or hot.

🍟 𝐎𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐑𝐌𝟏𝟐

Google reviews were raving about this dish so we had to try it. You know it's going to be good when it's so golden and nicely fried. It came with a thousand-island dip too. MUST ORDER!

🍹 𝐏𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐑𝐌𝟏𝟓

This drink consisted of 3 fruits - strawberry, pear and apple, which combined nicely. The pear and apple notes were more prominent, with a hint of strawberry. It stands out from the average juice beverage, and we would order a larger drink size if possible as it was so refreshing.

Bloom by Mokmok ⭐⭐⭐.5

Run by the same folks behind Dusk. We really enjoyed Dusk so we decided to try this cafe too.

🦀 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐛 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚 𝐑𝐌𝟑𝟔

We felt like this dish was lacking. The soft-shell crab was not crispy and hot, and the batter made the crab tough to chew. The pasta was cooked beyond al dente, which was a major no-no for us. The chilli crab sauce was not spicy and we would have preferred a stronger flavour profile.

🦑 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐌𝟑𝟗

The tomato sauce-based risotto had a good flavour profile, which didn't taste like the basic store-bought tomato base sauce. Good balance of flavours between the seafood and tomato sauce, though the seafood components - prawns, squid, and salmon were average.

🍮 𝐊𝐮𝐦𝐨 𝐔𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐨 (𝐌𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐬) 𝐑𝐌𝟐𝟓

These souffle pancakes were the highlight of the meal! The soft fluffy pancakes came with a hint of eggy taste, and when paired with the fresh strawberry and mango bits gave it a slight sour note. The vanilla ice-cream added sweetness to the dessert and combined with the warm soufflé pancakes to elevate the dish. The crumble adds the perfect crunch to the soft texture. Will return just for this dessert.

Re Patisserie ⭐⭐⭐⭐

We were looking for pastries to buy back to SG and stumbled upon this bakery with an incredible display, lined with visually pleasing pastries albeit slightly pricey.

🍰 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲

A crispy puff pastry that is multi-layered, similar to a croissant. The burnt cheese chantilly was creamy, though there wasn't any presence of burnt notes. The wild strawberries had a prominent sour flavor with a slightly sweet aftertaste, and overall the pastry wasn't too sweet.

Also tried the grapefruit tart and it was as good. Will definitely return for more.
