I have 2 wall niches in my home and here you see the “main” one that’s in the living room. Sharing here some of the considerations I took & the 3 key steps to decide on the details of my niche:

Step 1️⃣: Select the location

This is dependent on the purpose of your wall niche. Do you want one that helps you to better store and organise your things or one for the aesthetics? I knew from the start my niche is “for the gram 📸” so it has to be in a very prominent place where everyone will be able to see - the living room.

Another reason why the niche ended up at where it is in the image is because there was already a pre-existing “carved in” area on that wall and I want to make best use of that space. For your understanding, contractor actually needs to build “extra wall” around the niche to create the niche and not remove materials from the wall. This will actually make your overall space look smaller in a sense because you are adding in more materials. Making use of existing carved in space will allow you to add LESS materials which is therefore 👍

Step 2️⃣: Decide on the style

There are sooo many ways and materials you can use for your niche. I did a lot of research esp. on Pinterest to figure out the style I like. My husband and myself wanted something that looks very integrated with the rest of the wall and that was why we choose the “shelves” to be the same color and material/texture as rest of the wall. This makes my niche looks a lot more seamless! The niche also has 〰 curved finish on one side and that’s because we did not want the niche to look too “boxy”. The curved end makes the whole look a lot softer and integrated with the rest of the wall as well.

Step 3️⃣: Iron out the size details

This was definitely the hardest part for us. I was so stressed over the exact dimensions to choose BETWEEN each shelf, exact dimensions OF the shelves etc etc. The following 3 ways helped me to have a peace of mind

1. 🔍 We brought our free measuring tape from IKEA to stores that I remembered having nice niches to measure their sizes. Eg. One of the stores I visited was Claude at Ion Orchard and they have 2 niches in their shop. I even went to Charles & Keith to measure the distance between their shelves just to get an idea of how different heights look like irl.

2. ✍️ After we get a rough idea of the kind of dimensions we want, we took our free pencil & tape from IKEA to our house to literally draw out on the wall. This really helped us to visualise. We drew and drew a few times to get the perfect size and would totally recommend you to do this as well!

3. 🌷Do you have specific things you want to display on your niche? Measuring height and width of these items will also help you to decide on the size of your niche. For instance, I might want to put flower pot (with flowers of course!) on my top shelf and that was the reason why my top shelf has a taller height as compared to the other 2 shelves!

TADA 🎉 totally no regrets for all the efforts put in because I love my nicheee so much! Hope this helps you a bit in your journey discovering your dream niche 🫶
