Looking for a quick getaway from the concrete jungle that we call home? A short plane and ferry ride away lies the beautiful island of Koh Tao (in Thailand). Also what I call the perfect destination for chasing sunsets on a budget.

Koh Tao is a small island located in the Gulf of Thailand, known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life. While it's definitely not the most luxurious destination in Thailand, it's the perfect spot for broke budget travelers, like me, looking for an affordable getaway.

Getting to Koh Tao from Singapore is relatively easy, with direct flights to Koh Samui available from Singapore. From there, you can take a ferry to Koh Tao, which takes around 2-3 hours. Once you arrive on Koh Tao, you'll find that there are plenty of affordable accommodations available, ranging from hostels to budget hotels. While you won't find any five-star resorts on the island, you'll be able to find comfortable, clean accommodations for around SGD 20-30 per night.

Most tourists head to Mae Haad and Sairee beach when they come to Koh Tao, making them busy and touristy. If you’re looking to get away from the crowd, two of my favourite beaches for sunset watching are Sai Nuan Beach and Chalok, on the south side of Koh Tao. There are few bars along the beach of Chalok, and my two favorite are bubble bar and chill bar. Situated right along the beach, it makes for a perfect sunset spot with a nice cold beer.

Sai Nuan is also a great place for sunset, if you can get up there. Located up some pretty steep hills, I’d recommend getting a taxi or renting a bike up there (only if you can ride). It’s further away location from the main parts of the island however make it so that there will be as little tourists as possible. Sain Nuan beach stretches along pretty far and you can even take a short hike up to the abandoned resorts at Sai Nuan if you’re feeling up for it.
