hi again!!
so a while back i went to korea and decided to achieve a small dream of mine to attend an open class in korea?? and i ended up being there the week THE lia kim was teaching a learnerâs class so HDJSJSJSJ
okay, i went to 1M and justjerk (then more known studios) & i went to 1M twice actually so hereâs some thoughts and tips about the exp if youâre considering to go!
just a short note first, kr dance studios wonât help everyone video like sg dance studios so itâs always good to just ask someone to help you video the first round your dance in grps jic youâre not picked for the official video or in some cases, they donât even post the official videos (sometimes even if they post they donât post every group they selected tooâŠ)
for 1M you can book online (they have an app)/at the counter but since my first class was with a friend i was meeting there & the second class was the lia kim class i decided to just book online cause i didnât want to risk it being fully booked
[ but do note for global payments online you would need to use paypal which charges an exorbitant platform fee⊠]
either way you would need to make an account with 1M and upload a selfie for them to verify you before class (youâll need to show ur QR code for them to scan)
i would reccomend only making the account closer to when you actually go tho since they have a 5000krw voucher for ur first class that expires one month after the acc is made
i ended up paying $33.40sgd for the first lesson (incl 5000krw disc) and $39.43sgd for the second class. but classes are originally 28,000krw without paypal fee!
1M also has a âwater bottle queue systemâ so you can place your water bottle outside the dance studio to queue before & about 5mins before class starts you can go back and stand with ur water bottle so thats the order you enter the studio! everyone follows this system & there are staff around so i donât think youâd need to really worry about something happening?
both classes i went for were learnerâs class and honestly i felt like it was less stress than sg classes since it was abit commercialised? to me at least and i donât mean that in a bad way!! either way as someone that freezes up when i feel like everyone is watching me it was also better for me since i felt like everyone was too busy watching/marking themselves than scrutinising and either way when the instructor did something cool everyone still reacted together & since there were quite a lot of foreigners most people spoke eng too
the first 1M class
instructor: root (@/rootspace_ on ig)
so my friend and i were queueing at the counter for super long because we didnât know it was sign in outside the class (when youâre queueing) not at the counter so we only placed our waterbottles to queue like 5mins before class started and we were 3rd out of 5 rows?? the class was really a vibe and he also translated some parts to eng when he could! it wasnât really like videoed properly at the end though (like with professional cams and all like the other classes) but iâm guessing itâs because he was a substitute teacher for that class even though he teaches there regularly? iâm not too sure but still a good exp
the second 1M class
instructor: lia kim & hyewon (@/liakimhappy & @/hyew0nn on ig)
this class was way more crowded than rootâs class (i went 15mins early and was like in the 4th out of 7 rows??) but ig since they expected the class to be crowded they also added a small elevated platform for the instructors to teach on so everyone could see them! & honestly this class also felt more like a fanmeet like some people didnât even really dance at the end⊠& everyone was queue outside to take a photo with lia kim and giving letters & gifts??? (ok but i also queued to take a photo) BUT STILL WAS AN AMAZING CLASS and sometimes when there were low responses they would translate their question to eng and ask again too đđ
ok so i went to the ewha branch since i heard it was less crowded! + i wanted to go for this choreographer (yechan)âs class but i only found out the day before he wasnât teaching that week :â) BUT!! i was last minute stalking justjerk class teachers and i decided to go for another teacherâs class
for justjerk you would need to go down and book the class (& register with ur passport if itâs your first time there) the counter staff was able to speak english fluently with me and next to me there were also staff speaking in chinese so i think itâs really foreigner friendly.
class booking starts at 3pm iirc and itâs better to go early and book (esp if the instructor is popular) then go do something else while waiting.
- one class is 30,000krw ($30.13 sgd for me at that point if time)
justjerk ewha class!
instructor: jikang (@/jikang_choi on ig)
okay even tho going for this class was a last minute decision this was like my favourite open class like⊠ever⊠the instructor is quite new to having regular classes (i found out after heâs only a year older than me and thatâs so insane). the choreo was quite difficult (even though the instructor said it was easy on his ig story the day beforeâŠ) but he was teaching at a good pace and the class vibes was quite good? the only thing is i realised there was no like clapping/cheering culture at the grp performances besides the instructor unlike other studios?? OK BUT I FR LIKED THIS CLASS SM IM HOPING HE COMES SG TO DO AN POP UP CLASS ONE DAY
the class was also quite small compared to the classes i saw after and it was mostly korean locals (total 0 eng speaking compared to 1M) but i still had a great time even though i did not understand a single thing anyone said the entire lesson LOLS!
for videoing i also just went up to some random girl and like did the offer phone gesture and she also just took my phone and helped me video so thereâs really no awkwardness in asking someone to help you video,, like someone also did the same to me and i wld js take their phone and move to the front to fancam them)
ok but the class i went to was also like edited choreography to an open class he did with his dance crew a while back so i guess even though they videoed they didnât post the class on the youtube channel :â)
either ways, going for dance classes in korea was an amazing experience and i definitely reccomend you to go if youâre considering it! (iâm literally mentally planning another trip to seoul js for danceâŠ) honestly 1M is definitely the most foreigner friendly & felt abit commercialised (at least for learnerâs class) so it wasnât actually that intimidating but either way as long as you can see the instructor to learn from their moves i think itâs fine!
omg sorry i talked sm but last note! i think one of the biggest concerns was my passport since thereâs no proper lockers to put your items? and you only bring your water bottle & phone in unlike sg dance studios so you just leave ur bag outside (in cubbies for 1M & on a bench for justjerk) all 3 classes i just yolo-ed and left it in my bag (if i donât bring it out people wonât know its there ykâŠ) but another singaporean i met there decided to just bring it in the studio? ok but heads up so if u can, itâs better to just not bring it (but unlikely if its ur first lesson for justjerk)
