Balancing hormones is ALL the talk in todays world…and as someone who has struggled with fibrocystic breast lumps and the negative hormonal effects of being on birth control, I feel like it may be beneficial to share a few tips I have used since coming off birth control to help balance out my hormone levels.

Since coming off birth control, I HAVE experienced hormonal acne, mood changes and bloating etc. depending on the time of the month. I want to make that very clear because those symptoms are actually VERY NORMAL for a woman throughout her cycle. However having an irregular, painful or non-existent

periods, thyroid problems, coarse/dry skin and hair, high levels of anxiety or depression are signs of hormonal imbalances and what I have been trying to target through my routine.

That being said; here are a few of my tips for hormonal health:

1. Watch your caffeine intake

That’s not to say that you can’t have your coffee; but just that the AMOUNT of caffeine you take in can affect your cortisol levels. High cortisol levels can in turn, affect other hormones like estrogen, and increase feelings of stress and anxiety. Usually with caffeine, the lower the amount of mg, the better.

2. High protein, whole food focus diet

Protein aids in our body’s ability to produce peptide hormones (for metabolism, appetite, stress etc.) which can only be made from the amino acids that we derive from protein. Our bodies cannot make those amino acids on their own which is why protein is so important! Aside from that, typically, the less ingredients a product has on its label, the better it is for you. Some added ingredients and chemicals can impact hormonal health!

3. Alcohol in moderation

In general, alcohol is a toxin to your body…meaning you’re not supposed to be ingesting it (hence its effects). Aside from that, alcohol slows down your livers ability to function properly, which is responsible for hormone metabolism. It can increase estrogen levels as well! So, I’m not saying don’t drink it, I’m just saying to have it in moderation.

4. Supplements for hormonal health

There’s a lot of supplements on the market for fat loss and endurance, but none of that will matter with hormonal imbalances! Structuring your supplement routine for hormone support is vital and will help you achieve even more progress!

5. Prioritize stress reduction and regular physical activity

Stress is a huge corporate of hormonal imbalances…each day should have some form of stress reduction activity and physical activity to ensure that your cortisol levels aren’t sky rocketing (especially if you’ve been working all day). Do what feels best for you!
