This was one of those movies where the interpretation is up to you. My personal interpretation of the movie was that our mothers have the power to influence our every thought and action. Whether we do it consciously or not, we mirror them. Especially the oldest child in attempt to get approval and more love. This movie shows how the detrimental mental health affects those of her children as her rituals and ways of viewing the world are instilled upon them. Though the mother was running away from evil, the evil existed within her and her fears of the outside world. Which is why the hallucinations she had were of the people she killed. Once her eldest went through with his first sin, the evil existed within him too.

My interpretation of the ending specifically the scene of the photograph. I think that the evil showed up in the photograph because the eldest son finally allowed it in by following in his mothers actions. So the evil was real, but only because he invited it in.

I think the movie plays a lot with schizophrenic/schizotypal behavior and generational trauma.

Although the cinematography and acting even was great, there were many parts of the movie that was extremely hard to watch. Which I guess was the goal? However, I felt like some of the jump scares were excessive and over the top so I was always anticipating something. If this is something that you enjoy, your rating may be higher, however I get so queasy so this movie unfortunately will only be 2 stars from me!
