I spent 5 nights in Fukuoka this summer vacation and tried a different place for dinner each evening. I have to say everything deserves a 5 ⭐️ rating.

Nakasu Yatai Yokocho (Food Stalls Street)

Had ramen and yakitori at a street stall, food was tasty though the price was slightly expensive. But definitely an interesting and fun dining experience. Full review here.

Ichiran Ramen Canal City

Fukuoka is the birthplace for the popular tonkatsu ramen and where Ichiran was founded. The Canal City branch of Ichiran Ramen serves up an exclusive Wafu Tonkotsu Ramen made in a special dashi which you don’t get at other branches across the country. In fact the outlet just reopened days before my trip and thankfully there was no queue when I went.

The broth is rich and I’d say it’s nicer than the usual ichiran ramen, but I can’t really describe it in words haha you just gotta try it. They also serve the ramen in a rectangle lacquer box, as opposed to the usual round bowls at other branches. The most basic ramen costs 1180 yen at Canal City vs 980 yen at other regular branches.

Hakata Hanamidori

This restaurant is known for their mitzutaki (chicken collagen hotpot). If you like Bijin Nabe, you gotta try this. The soup is amazing, the meatballs were tasty and the chicken is super tender, perfect for a rainy night. It was expensive but well worth it. The service was attentive and the staff constantly came to check and refill the soup.

There’s several courses to choose from, I went for the basic nabe course which was 3,500 yen per pax. It comes with an appetizer, chicken, hotpot ingredients and ramen. The more expensive courses include sides or chicken sashimi.

Yakitori Issho

This is a hole in the wall yakitori joint that was near the hotel I stayed at. It’s a very local place so the menu was all in Japanese - just relied on Google translate the entire time to read the menu. However the staff were helpful and the service was fast. They’ve got quite a large selection of yakitori and other dishes.

The yakitori, alcohol and other dishes were cheap and amazing - the yakitori well grilled. Haha probably over ordered, but it’s super value for money.

Muichimon Hakata

A famous izakaya near the hotel i stayed at. There was a long line of people waiting so had to wait a while before getting seated. This place is quite tourist friendly - they’ve got English, Chinese & Korean menus here.

Food and drinks were amazing and inexpensive. The mentai tamagoyaki is a must try! Enjoyed the meal there!
