🇨🇭Zermatt & the Matterhorn 🏔️

Zermatt is home to the Matterhorn, Switzerland’s most iconic mountain. It’s also the mountain which was featured on the Toblerone chocolate packaging for the longest time.

It’s definitely worth a visit to the town of Zermatt, an idyllic mountain village and to see the Matterhorn.

There’s 3 mountain peaks to visit from Zermatt: Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Gornergrat and Rothorn.

It’s pretty costly to do all of them, so I decided to do just one and picked the Gornergrat.

🚂 Gornergrat Bahn

Took the Gornergrat Bahn to the peak and the views were really amazing 😍. Going all the way to the top, there’s viewing platforms, a hotel, a small church, gift shops and a Zooom Virtual Reality experience… There are several spots where you could take pictures of the Matterhorn from.

Try to sit on the right side of the train on the ascent for the best views. Along the way, there are multiple stops you could hop off to take a walk or photos. During summer, you could also take a hike around Riffelsee and/or Riffelberg.

Tickets are slightly pricey - iirc it was 44 CHF return (after a 50% off with the Swiss Travel Pass) when I went in Nov 2022, but definitely worth the experience.

However it’s important to be flexible in your itinerary, and check the weather forecasts - it’s not worth the time/money if it’s a cloudy or gloomy day.

I really enjoyed this mountain excursion a lot more than the Jungfraujoch. Besides it’s also a lot cheaper. Read my review of the Jungfraujoch here
