Venice is literally built on the water, so not only is seafood widely available, but it’s also of the highest quality. Many seafood dishes in Venice are influenced by Middle Eastern cuisine, due to the city’s history of commercial trade.

Also, because Venetians were seafarers, they often ate foods that preserved well, like baccalà (dried and salted cod), corn, potatoes, and rice. Listed below are typical foods that every Venetian grew up with. Some are a bit adventurous, but that’s why you go to travel!

1. Cicchetti

For a starter, Cicchetti are typical Venetian, small plates or finger foods accompanied by a glass of wine or Spritz. They are filled or topped with an irresistible array of baked, deep-fried, pickled, or sauced seafoods, cured meats, eggs, cheeses, and vegetables.

Where to eat?

📍Osteria Dai Zemei

Located close to the Rialto Bridge, this little rustic-chic osteria is busy and bustling with locals, and for a good reason.

There is an appetizing and myriad variety of cicchetti to choose from at Osteria Dai Zemei. Meat, tuna, or eggplant croquettes; crostini and panini with imaginative combos of radicchio, artichokes, fish, sopressa, osso collo, and more enliven the glass case here. Of all the various varieties of Venice cicchetti we ate, baccalà mantecato (whipped salt cod fish spread) was unequivocally our favorite.

2. Gelato

You definitely have to eat gelato in Italy and you will not want to miss out on this SUPER GOOD gelato located at Venice.

Where to eat?

📍 Gelatoteca Suso

Located near to Rialto Bridge too and watch out for the long queue. They have a range of flavours for you to choose from - we tried pistachio, peanut butter with salted peanuts, lemon, strawberry cheesecake, tiramisu and white chocolate. To avoid crowd, you can try visiting early in the day (before lunch time) would be best.
