My Favorite Thanksgiving Traditions

Here are a few of our favorite Thanksgiving family traditions.

☀️Go on a Morning Walk

Thanksgiving is a time spent with family, which inevitably means stress and a little bit (okay, a lot) of chaos. To prepare for the craziness, I like to wake up early and go for a walk while sipping on a hot coffee. It’s a reminder to appreciate the nature around me and energizes me for the busy day ahead.

📝Write a “Thankful List”

Every year, I ask my son for 5 things he is thankful for. We write them down and reflect on what he has chosen. I keep these in his keepsake box to look back on each year. It’s been so fun looking back at his previous lists and seeing what has changed or remained the same.

💻FaceTime Family

Most of our family lives out of state, so we make sure to hop on FaceTime at some point in the day to express our love and to let them know how grateful we are for them. We talk to them periodically throughout the year, but being intentional with our time on this day always leaves us feeling fulfilled.

⛺️Build a Fort

While the food finishes, we build a fort in the living room and all cuddle up to watch A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Sometimes, we even light a fire in the fireplace to really get the cozy vibes going.

🎄Decorate the Christmas Tree

Normally, our tree is up before thanksgiving (I know, I know….), but we don’t decorate it until after Thanksgiving dinner. Waiting until after dinner allows us to bond and share memories both old and new.

🗞️Write a Christmas Wish List

We bust out the Black Friday newspaper ads and have our son circle what he wants for Christmas. This keeps him occupied while we clean up the kitchen and also helps us with a gift guide for Black Friday shopping!

💌Write a Letter to Santa

Before bed, we all write a letter to Santa and drop it in the Santa Mailbox. We include the Wish List in the envelope with the letter. On Christmas Eve, I open the mailbox and show that the letter is gone and explain that maybe Santa came by to grab the list so he knew what we wanted this year.

Our traditions aren’t very traditional, but they are unique and special to us.
