before I start spilling, let me clarify that I'm not telling you to switch jobs (although that's definitely one way to achieve the goal 馃). alsooo, this won't work in every industry, for example, f&b/events. salaries in certain industries are super standardised.
ok so the reason I'm making this post is because it's easier than you think it is to get a pay raise. yes, you can earn more, at the SAME role, at the SAME company, doing the SAME thing. employees/agents/managers will (almost) always offer a lower salary/wage, because that benefits them by reducing their costs and increasing their profits. after all, why would they want to pay an employee $3k when the employee is willing to settle at $2.6k? that being said, employers generally have a higher budget in terms of salaries for employees. of course, you better be performing up to standards鈥攊f not exceeding expectations鈥攂efore you ask for a pay raise 馃え.
here's the key to getting a higher pay (the same key applies to getting ANYTHING in life): ASK.
if you don't ask, how do you think you'll get what you want?
I posted screenshots of some REAL examples of how I've gotten a higher pay.
here's a summary on how I usually go about it:
1. establish your relationship with the agent/manager; essentially how chill are they?
- with managers you're comfortable with: it doesnt have to be a super long or elaborate message, ofc it shouldn't be TOO casual either
- draft a more elaborate and formal message to send to managers you're less familiar with
2. give some basis for asking for a pay raise
- eg. job experience with other agencies
- eg. market rate you've gauged from speaking to others
3. quote an even higher pay than what you would perhaps expect
- either you get the higher pay or reach a middle ground (generally)
- negotiate!
4. PERFORM BETTER IF YOURE GETTING PAID BETTER!!!
- you don't deserve to get paid more if your performance doesn't improve accordingly
- have good work ethics, don't be disrespectful or cocky
- ask for feedback and be responsive to feedback
I know a lot of people who do the same roles as I do, but for a lower pay. most of these people have as much experience as me in the respective industry, if not, even more. I understand that asking for a higher pay can make you feel quite "paiseh" and uncomfortable but you need to take the risk or you'll never advance.
while I don't have experience in a full-time job as a full-time student, I'm confident that I'll be using similar tactics in the future.
I'd love to hear any of your experiences with getting a salary raise too!
