The problem with dark homes🌚🌥always check for sun☀️

🏡 Before moving in, we didn’t realise how dark our home is 🥲 We went to view the home when Singapore was really sunny and the previous owner always turned all the lights on whenever we were over. After living in the home for a while and going through Singapore’s many rainy months, we finally realised the true reality of living in a home that is constantly dark.

🌥 Here are a few realities of living in a home that doesn’t get much sunlight:

* Heavy air & dark mood 🖤

If your home doesn’t get enough sunlight, your mood might be dampened by your dark surroundings. I know I get much sleepier when the home is dark even if it’s in the middle of the day, making me much less productive than usual 💤 The air also feels heavier and I constantly have to open the door for the whole day just to brighten things up slightly!

* Book lice problem 🐜

Because of the lack of sunlight, book lice thrive on wood surfaces in our home. While it’s normal to encounter book lice at home (especially if it’s newly renovated), we even see our wooden utensils or chopping boards infested by book lice! Although they are relatively harmless, they do give me anxiety because the home feels dirty with little insects crawling around.

* Plants not living their best lives 🌿

If you’re planning to get houseplants and your home doesn’t get much sunlight, think twice. We initially bought many decor plants for the home, but since our home is so dark we couldn’t really place them where we wanted to. We ended up placing everything in our service yard just so the plants could survive, because that’s the only place at home that gets constant sunlight throughout the day.

* Constant mold 🍄

However much we clean, we always see mold coming back to the same places at home. Naturally, our bathroom sees the most mold because it is often wet and hard to dry. We had to scrub the wall and floor every week although the mold always comes back in another week or two.

If you’re in the midst of shopping for a home, learn from us and always ask the owner to turn off all the lights at home before committing. That way, you get a more realistic view of the sunlight situation and won’t have to live with these problems like our dum dum selves 🥹🥲
