One of the most important thing to have in the kitchen is the cooking hob and deciding on the *right* one is a real headache. We know because it took us weeks of research before we found one that we like and matches our budget 🫠

✨Here are a few things to take into account before deciding on the perfect hob for your kitchen:

1. Cooking Frequency ⏱

If you cook often and want a tidy home, you might want a hob that is easy to clean. In this case, an induction hob is easier to clean than a gas hob because you just need to wipe a flat surface (vs. having to remove the metal parts of a gas hob and wipe every nook and cranny in them).

If you cook often and are thrifty, a gas hob will work better because gas is cheaper than electricity in Singapore. In the long run, this recurring cost will add up to quite a lot - it is estimated that using an induction hob can add $50 to your electrity bill every month.

If you don't cook at all (and have no plans to), perhaps you can even get away with a portable hob that you can store away when not in use.

2. Cooking Intensity 🔥

If you cook complex dishes with many steps, you might want to invest in a hob that has many cooktops with varying sizes. This will make it easier for you to cook everything simultaneously, instead of having to wait for your current cooking to be done before you can move on to the next steps.

If you hardly cook or only cook simple dishes, perhaps a hob with a single cooktop can work; and you get to use all the extra counter space in the kitchen for other things!

3. Different Types of Hobs (Gas or Induction?) 🔥⚡️🍳

Gas and induction are two of the most popular types of hobs available in the market, each with their own pros and cons.

🔥Gas hobs are generally cheaper and lets you cook on an open flame (for the wok hei feel), but are harder to clean and prone to gas leaks.

⚡️Induction hobs have a clean, minimalist look and are generally safer if you have pets or children at home because they do not produce fire. However, they tend to be more expensive than gas hobs and have a higher running cost because electricity is more expensive than gas in Singapore. In addition to that, you will need to buy special induction cookwares that are compatible with your hobs which are also generally more expensive.

⚠️Induction hobs generate electromagnetic fields and can cause problems to your pacemaker if you're wearing one.

🤔If you can't decide between gas and induction, there are also hybrid hobs that let you cook with both!

4. Electrical Load Limit (if using induction hob) ⚡️

If you're planning to get an induction hob, you also need to be mindful of the electrical load limit in your home. For example, the typical electrical load limit in an HDB flat is 40amp. This might mean that your induction cooktop need to run on less than 20amp (considering you would have other appliances running at the same time), which would limit your cooking space to 2 cooktops max.

All in all, there is no perfect answer to which kind of hob you should get. Everything boils down to your own lifestyle and cooking preferences, but we hope this list has helped you narrow down your search.
