On top of renovation, furniture cost usually makes up a big chunk of your home makeover budget ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿฅฒ At times we scratch our heads on how a simple sofa can cost a few thousand dollars, but such is the reality of living in a big city like Singapore - everything is expensiveโœจ

When we got our home, we had a strict budget we needed to work with. To keep to our budget, we sourced furniture from alternative sources like Taobao or buy them second-hand. Some people might think that second-hand furniture won't last long because they have been pre-owned, but we find that this is not true at all!

โœจWe bought a bed frame + mattress for our guest room for $150 from an expat who was leaving Singapore, and a bedside table for $50 from Carousell. That's a whole bedroom set for $200, a price you will never get if you buy things new. The items are also in good condition because they have only been owned for a year or two.

โœจIf you are also interested in getting second-hand furniture, here are a few places we recommend you start searching in:

1. Expat Groups on Facebook

Yes, we know, who even uses Facebook nowadays? Older people who are already settled in their lives and tend to own good quality furniture, that's who! Expat Facebook groups for furniture sales are buzzing with activity everyday because of the amount of people coming and leaving Singapore. These people tend to leave Singapore in a hurry (because of job loss, relocation or other reasons) and often sell their used furniture at a very good price. Some will even give you a discount just so that they can clear the items fast! The furniture that are on sale are also usually good quality from prominent brands, a really good deal we must say.

2. Carousell

An app that most Singaporeans are familiar with, Carousell is another good place to start your used furniture search. There are some nice furniture for sale on Carousell, although we find that most of the sellers tend to be people who are based in Singapore/not moving overseas, so they do not need to urgently sell their items and because of that won't offer additional discounts.

3. Olio

Olio is an app where people can list items they no longer need for others to pick up for free. Since the items are free, they are not in pristine condition anymore - although we did spot some gems while browsing the app. We saw a sofa bed, a bed frame, a vacuum cleaner, a wall rack and a couch in the span of just a few days. The good items are gone fast (we tried to get a few but they are all gone within a few minutes of listing!), so be sure to check the app often to get a chance of scoring a good deal.
