lately it feels like days have been getting longer — be it as a student or at work. i'm sure you feel it too — if you're a student, it's probably about time that mid-terms and assignments roll in. if you're already working, we're entering the final stretch for 2022, so work might be piling up. when things get a little crazy, many of us might feel overwhelmed but feel a compulsion to tahan and grind our way through — focusing only on what needs to be done, but forgetting how we feel and how it can impact what we can do.

for those who know me, my friends (myself included) often call myself a mad workaholic — creative freelancer, small studio owner, part-time suit at a brand agency, still a student trying to get through university — and of course, i'm here making content! simply because there are so many things that i'm doing, i often feel the need to stretch my days and use every minute to the fullest — often eating into time for rest and mental resets. as a result, i've been feeling the brunt of it lately, especially as physical ailments start popping up 😩 i guess the human body has its own ways of telling you that you've been mistreating it for way too long.

i realised this a little late, so i'm just here to #spillthetea about some lifestyle changes that helped me improve things!

01 — when tired, take a moment to breathe and pace yourself 🥃

when we have a lot of tasks on hand, i think a lot of us may feel the need to jump right into it — to get started right away so that we can power through and get everything done. but instead of rushing things, i think a little bit of rest can go a long way! be it by taking a power nap, sitting down to space out to music that you like, i would recommend just giving yourself time to decompress before processing the things that you have to do again. that way, you'll have a clearer mind and be able to tell what to prioritise!

once you're in a better headspace, it's often easier to plan your time and wrap your head around tasks — especially if it's complex!

02 — make sure you feel comfortable where you're working 🖥

before my most recent burnout, i used to question why everyone was spending money to put their ideal work set-up together — since i was used to working non-stop on the go with my laptop. i used to be someone who felt that the environment shouldn't matter, but i guess it takes one to know HAHA only after i invested in putting one together, did i realise that being comfortable in the space that you're working in changes things completely.

throw in some vibes that you love, add some final touches that help you get productive, maybe light a scented candle — and when you're in a good mood, everything just feels better.

03 — lastly, always think about why you're working 😳

now i know that this is a strange question... i mean if you're a student, you're practically forced to study — and we all need to work to make ends meet. but i feel like once you accept it as something you can't control and you're doing for the sake of doing, it's often harder to pick yourself up again when the going gets tough. even though what you're doing might not be the most interesting, try to find things about it that might give you joy! celebrate the small wins and always recognise your growth.

personally, my answer to that question is this: even though i'm pulling all-nighters, rushing like mad and sometimes on the brink of losing it, i couldn't be happier knowing that i'm spending my 20's building something — whether it's for myself, or my loved ones — present and future. and i think that keeps me motivated and going.

these are some tips that helped me personally, and are by no means professional advice — so do take them with a pinch of salt since everyone works in different ways, but i'd really love to know if they helped you, and if you have any tips of your own — do share them in the comments below! here's to more growth for all of us ☺
