Korean food that’s better than Seoul’s🥢

Dubbed the “museum without walls” and the ancient capital of Korea, Gyeongju is THE place to go if you want to soak yourself in the roots of Korean culture. Food, history, everything!!! Watch the city come alive in motion 🥰

As for food, we mostly ate what was convenient instead of going out of our way. In Gyeongju we trusted, and Gyeongju delivered 🙂‍↕️👏🏼

📍Hwangnidan-gil

We popped by on our first day past 930pm since most restaurants were already closed and the street was still bustling with people! Tried many random stalls but the highlight was defo the hotteok and 10won cheese coin. Jjondeugi was really weird imo… it’s like fries but sweet ???? and made me crave actual fries instead 🥲

Fun fact: 10won cheese coin originated here bc the Dabotap Pagoda on the coin is in Gyeongju!

📍Do Not Disturb & LLOW cafe

Gyeongju is littered with cafes with amazing views and these are just 2 of the many! Honestly don’t think any supercedes the other in terms of food so just visit whichever you vibe with better. One of my biggest regrets is not visiting Bichkkuli because they serve authentic tteok desserts 🤩

📍Eotang (opp Bulguksa)

Bulguksa is where the Dabotap on the 10won coin is, and the most famous attraction of Gyeongju - even for locals! We saw hoardes of students and ahjummas streaming in by midday so make sure to go early.

Back to food - we stopped by a food area with many restaurants and decided to try this place because it was highly rated on Naver and looked super authentic! Even though they specialise in eel soup, I think it’s quite an acquired taste. Their soondubujiggae is an amazing alternative if you don’t have an adventurous palette.

📍Hwangnamppang

Famous Gyeongju bread! SUPER GOOD MUST TRY NOTHING MORE TO SAY 😮‍💨 it doesn’t taste as good when it cools down so 👏🏼eat👏🏼it👏🏼fresh👏🏼‼️ pls also do not buy the ones from other shops. We did and they’re not nearly as good.

📍Solsot

Chanced upon this place at the back alley of Hwangnidan-gil where all the restaurants are and only found out how famous it was after. They have quite a lot of outlets in Korea and long queues too. We were there at an odd timing (2-3pm) so no queue 🤩

If Gyeongju is not on your itinerary, I urge you to ADD IT NOW especially if you’re going to Busan. It’s a beautiful place and very different experience from the big cities.
