Before You Go:

Buy Tickets in Advance: Secure your day visit pass to Machu Picchu well in advance through the official website or in person at the ticket office in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). Tickets are limited and can sell out quickly. My tickets were included in my guided tour of the area but stand alone tickets can be purchased online or in person for $45

Choose the Right Time: The best time to visit is early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. Consider purchasing a morning time slot for your visit.

Pack Light: Bring a small backpack with essentials like water, snacks, a rain jacket, sunscreen, a hat, and your passport (for identification). Note: passport is required for entry to Machu Picchu

Dress Appropriately: Wear comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, and sturdy walking shoes for exploring the uneven terrain.

Getting There:

Aguas Calientes: Most visitors stay in Aguas Calientes, which is the gateway to Machu Picchu. You can take a train from Ollantaytambo or hike the Inca Trail to get here (see previous post for a guide to hiking the Inca trail)

Bus to Machu Picchu: From Aguas Calientes, take a 25-minute bus ride to the entrance of Machu Picchu. Buses start operating early in the morning to accommodate early visitors.

Entering Machu Picchu:

Security Check: You'll go through a security check before entering. Bags are subject to inspection, so avoid bringing large bags or prohibited items.

Ticket Check: Present your day visit pass and identification (your passport) at the entrance gate.

Exploring Machu Picchu:

Guided Tour: Consider hiring a local guide at the entrance for a more insightful experience. Guides can provide historical context and interesting facts about the site. My guide, Estaban, sponsored by National Geographic, did an amazing job providing our group with extra information and history of the ruins. He also knew all of the best photo opt spots

Machu Picchu Highlights: Don't miss the following key attractions within the site:

The Main Plaza: The heart of Machu Picchu, surrounded by impressive architectural structures.

The Sun Temple: A fascinating stone building with precise astronomical alignments.

The Intihuatana Stone: A ritual stone associated with Inca astronomy.

The Inca Bridge: A remarkable engineering feat.

Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountains: If you have the energy, consider hiking one of these peaks for panoramic views (requires a separate ticket and much more information; if you are interested please reach out and I can share additional instructions)

Important Tips:

Stay Hydrated: The high altitude can be dehydrating. Drink water regularly.

Respect the Rules: Follow the guidelines and rules set by the site, including not touching or climbing on the stone structures, no selfie sticks, and no flags

Photography: Feel free to take photos, but be mindful of other visitors and the sacred nature of the site.

Leave No Trace: Keep the site clean by disposing of trash properly.

Conclusion:

Visiting Machu Picchu for the day with a day visit pass is an incredible experience that allows you to witness one of the world's most remarkable archaeological sites. Plan ahead, arrive early, and take your time exploring the ancient ruins to fully appreciate the magic and history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy your day in the footsteps of the Incas!
