Zaanse Schan - Best Day Trip from Amsterdam

If you find yourself in Amsterdam with a little extra time to kill or you just want to experience more of the Holland countryside I highly recommend adding a trip to Zaanse Schans to your travel itinerary.

Zaanse Schans is a neighborhood located in the Dutch town of Zaandam, about 40-45 minutes outside of Amsterdam via a direct bus route (purchase tickets from Amsterdam Central Station). The town is lined with historic windmills & the iconic green wooden houses Holland is so known for.

Take the day and walk the traditional canals browsing what a traditional 18th/19th city in Holland would have looked like. Every corner is a photo opt.

Some of my must do items:

1. Zaans Museum which showcases regional costumes, windmill models, and interactive exhibits on chocolate making

2. The Wooden Shoe Workshop which is a traditional & family run clog-making shop with daily demonstrations, museum pieces, and clogs available for purchase

3. Catharina Hoeve Cheese Farm which features pretty much any type of cheese you can imagine with sample stations throughout the storm and cheese making demonstrations daily
