hiii 😍😍 this is my first uni post ! i'll be entering uni next month so i hope to post more about uni
-----
today i'll be sharing how i got my scholarship despite not having participated in many extracurriculars in jc. 🫨🫨 i'm not discrediting the importance of extracurriculars in any way; i rly respect those who dedicated their time in jc to leadership positions, multiple ccas etc 🫡🫡 i sincerely hope this post will be an encouragement to those who wish to apply for scholarships yet did not participate much in extracurriculars ~
-----
📚 i applied for uni scholarships w the following:
- 88.875 rp (3h2 + 1h1, no h3 subjects)
- active participation in cca but no leadership position
- no other leadership positions in jc
- no internship experience
- didn't participate in any academic competitions in jc
- i did volunteer quite often throughout my jc life
- currently volunteering with a non-profit law organisation (did not include this in scholarship apps tho)
-----
🎓👩🎓 scholarships i applied for:
- non-bonded uni scholarships only
-----
💡 my 2 cents worth / tips !
1️⃣ JUST APPLY
- initially, i didn't apply for any scholarships, as i thought that a stellar portfolio was required. the scholarships i was considering ALL stated that 'exceptional leadership potential'/ leadership experience was required, but i was just a student with only good grades and nothing else to offer.
- my biggest regret is letting my inferiority stand in the way of applying for more scholarships, as this effectively limited my options 😪😪
- overall, i wouldn't say that i was lucky to get my scholarship. i have many friends who were in the same boat as me but still got some of the most prestigious scholarships offered by nus, ntu and smu

2️⃣ HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE INTERVIEW ?
💡research about the scholarship
- some scholarships are purely money, while others include scholars' programmes with other commitments u need to fulfill throughout your uni life
- it's important to be knowledgeable about the scholarship you're applying for bc interviewers may ask why u think you're a good fit for their scholars' programme
- my interviewers were impressed when i demonstrated knowledge about what is expected of awardees of the scholarship
💡 mentally prepare yourself for different scenarios
- interviewers like to change up the interview process
- for one of my interviews, i heard that they give scenario-based questions. BUT for my own interview, i got a topic-based discussion 🥹🥹 so yes, must train urself to be adaptable 👎👎
💡how will you contribute to the sch/ institution ? why do you think u are deserving of this scholarship?
- these are common qns interviewers like to ask !
💡 DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR US ?
- omg pls prepare a GOOD, SOLID question to ask. it is so impt to ask a smart question because this is the last qn in the entire interview, and you'll want to leave a good 'last' impression
-----
3️⃣ DURING THE INTERVIEW
💡dress well 👗👔
- scholarship interviewers place a lot of emphasis on what kind of person the applicant is; dressing well shows the interviewers how important this is to you
- the dress code is usually smart casual/ business casual
- i was so stressed abt what to wear bc i didn't want to seem too try hard, neither did i want to look sloppy. 😬😬
- i ended up wearing formal wear to all my interviews (i even wore court shoes to my law interview 😔✋) and was so self conscious LOL but i don't regret it one bit bc i can assure u that no one will look at u bc everyone is so preoccupied with doing well for the interview so don't stress about your attire 🧘♀️🧘♀️
💡carry yourself well
- greet your interviewers even if your fellow interviewees don't
- thank them for their time after the interview
- be yourself and act natural ! i honestly really enjoyed my scholarship interview. i realised that i enjoyed it bc i acted naturally and talked about things that i was truly passionate about. 🫶🏻🫶🏻i left the interview feeling rly glad that i showed the interviewers who i was as a person, and didn't feel as uptight and nervous as i did during my law interview, where i was so overly preoccupied with trying to appear professional
💡 scholars MUST contribute to the school --> show them what you can offer
💡 show the interviewers that you are INTERESTED in this scholarship 🤩🤩
- i showed my interest by picking up certain keywords from the school website that describe the scholarship/ programme that i applied for
- for eg, i mentioned that i saw how beneficial the 'interdisciplinary curriculum' is in this VUCA world we live in
💡 be confident 💪💪
- some interviewers like to challenge you. they will question what you say, interrupt you and assert their own opinions
- it is important to mentally prepare yourself that this might happen
- during my law interview, my interviewer misunderstood what i had said. she thought that i didn't know my facts and immediately called me out 😰😰
- i made sure to remain composed and respectfully acknowledged what she had said before re-explaining myself
💡 engage with your fellow interviewees
- you can say that you agree / disagree with a certain statement they brought up
-----
4️⃣ THE WRITEUP/ SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY
💡 before beginning to write, think about who you are as a person
- let your personality shine through the essay --> if you're an inquisitive person, you can show them what you've done that shows that you're interested in the topic
💡 be creative
- most scholarships allow u to pick from a bunch of questions / topics to write about. choose a topic that you are passionate about
- one of my questions was about a person who i would like to meet. i chose a historical figure who was a pioneer in the field that i will be studying in uni. this allowed me to bring in my curiosity and passion about my field of study
- if the question you picked is about a particular topic, try to offer new insights
- show your critical thinking by challenging commonplace perceptions
-----
overall, i think that a good portfolio is truly a useful stepping stone to getting shortlisted for scholarship interviews, but it is def not a must. ultimately through much preparation and sincerity, i, a student with an almost empty portfolio, was able to clinch a coveted scholarship. so for my juniors who r still in jc, don't be so worried if you haven't done much outside of acads, you still have a good chance of getting a scholarship
omg i yap sm 💀💀 if u read to the end, tysm i'm so happy u did ❤️❤️ hope this was helpful !
