hello ! this is based solely on my personal experience and the methods that i used throughout my jc life that enabled me to do well ππ imo, doing well in jc is a combination of hard work πͺ and experimenting with various study methods to see what works for u.
TIPS:
β-
try to simulate the real a lvl exam conditions (rly impt!!!) π§π§
- through:
1. timed practices
2. adjusting ur body clock such that youre functioning well at the time of the exam β°
- eg. if the actual a lvl math paper is at 8am, do all your past yr math practice papers at 8am too! - this trains your mind to be active at such an early hour
- can start this habit about a month before prelims and continue till the actual a lvls
β-
practice questions > memorising content π©βπ«
- one of the biggest mistakes i committed in j1 is focusing all my time and energy on memorising content.
- β NEVER memorise your schoolβs notes word for word!
- β memorise keywords only !! (which should be bolded in your schoolβs notes)
- 2 months before the a lvls is a critical period π!! by then, you should already be very familiar with your content, so
- instead of memorising content, u shld be practicising questions and exposing urself to as many question types as possible
- π‘one piece of advice i rly appreciated frm my tutor: after prelims, finish all ur TYS papers first, before moving on to practicing other schβs prelim papers. the rationale behind this is that generally, TYS papers are much easier than other schβs prelim papers and doing well for TYS papers is likely to make students overconfident. doing other schβs prelim papers right before the A lvls will help students to become more accustomed to the difficulty level, preparing them for the increasingly difficult A lvl papers
β-
change your study environment π
- do timed practices in the library ππ(closest u can come to simulating actual exam conditions) + try not to listen to music while doing these timed practices
- i really liked to study in cafes π΅βοΈ in j1 so i made a list of the all the cafes i wanted to study at + food/ drinks that i wanted to try when i study there. β something to look forward to + motivation to get out of the hse to study πββοΈπββοΈ
β-
time every single practice paper u do β°β°
- referring to past year tys + other schβs prelims
- trains ur speed and ensures that youre able to attempt all questions when it comes to prelims and a lvls
- if u could not complete the paper within the stipulated time, take a break before completing the rest of the paper. record how much extra time u needed to complete the paper β this gives u a gauge of how much faster u need to be
β-
use study timers β°
- i used ypt!
- ypt enables u to track how much time youre spending on each subject β helps u to better plan your study schedule
β-
approaching any exam paper π
- 1. when u receive the paper, take about a minute to skim through ALL the questions in the paper
- 2. make a mental note of the questions u are confident u know how to ans
- 3. start doing these questions first to 'secure' the marks first (there's no need to do the paper in order !)
do them as quickly and accurately as possible to give yourself ample time to think about and attempt the questions you aren't as confident in
β-
(a bit of a no brained but) don't study when you're tired π₯±π΄
- 5 hours of quality work > 8 hours of slipshod work
β-
the a lvl journey is an INCREDIBLY tough one. pace yourself, take care of yourself so u don't burn out prematurely and it's okay if u aren't productive every single day. hope that these methods will be helpful for some of u π©΅π©΅
