Learning Thai as an American: My Journey So Far 🇹🇭

📸 As you can see from the first picture, I’m not exactly the most organized note-taker, and yeah, I get distracted in class—but I’m trying! 😅

I gotta be honest, language learning isn’t easy, especially when it comes to something like Thai, where the characters aren’t even close to what I grew up with. Unlike learning a language like Spanish (where you can pick up similarities with English), you can’t fast-track learning Thai. The symbols take time to get used to, and there’s no shortcut. 🧠✍️

But here’s the thing: you don’t need to study for hours on end every day to make progress. Even 30 minutes a day can work wonders! 🌱 Your brain is powerful and will start building new neurons as you learn. Take advantage of that!

Tip: Live where you want to learn. 🏙️ I’ve been living in Thailand for 6 months, and seeing Thai writing and hearing it every day has helped me pick up more than I realized. If you can’t live there, try watching media in the language. 🎶

🎵 Personally, I love music, so I listen to a lot of Thai songs. Since I’ve sung in bands and choirs, singing in Thai is easier for me than speaking it—crazy, right? 🎤😄

Also, be realistic with your goals. Did you learn your first language in under 6 months? Probably not. So give yourself time, and we’ll all get there eventually! 🌍🗣️
