Switching careers is a huge commitment. You're giving up something you've worked hard for, applying for jobs is awful, and who knows if it'll be worth it. After asking myself these questions, I 100% knew what I needed to do and do not regret it.
[Am I learning things that I want to be learning?]
In my last role, there were definitely areas where I knew I could be doing better. I personally found these areas boring and had no interest in learning them, even when I had time to spare during the day.
[Am I more willing to do tasks outside my actual job?]
I knew I wasn’t just being lazy because I volunteered for work outside of my job description regularly. I sought out more creative tasks from other teams which signaled to me that my actual role wasn’t fulfilling my desire to be creative enough.
[Can I see myself being my boss’s boss?]
When I looked at 3 roles up the corporate ladder, I did not want or envy the director of our team even when I took into account their salary.
[Can I see myself doing this same job at a different company?]
I spent hours on LinkedIn seeing if I just needed to work for a company I’m more passionate about. I did not feel a bit of excitement seeing my exact role at my dream company.
[BONUS TIP: Make a list of things you don’t like in your job]
Sometimes it’s easy to forget the parts of your job that suck when a couple good days happen (and vice versa). I caught myself saying “it’s not that bad, it’s worth the money” while also feeling deeply unhappy. During one of my worst days I wrote a list of why the role I had and the company I worked for were not a good fit. I looked at it every couple months until I finally quit.
