✨TOFU V DIARIES: HOUSE (& life)!

It’s been about 2 weeks since we moved into our new place, and it took a much bigger toll on me than I had expected. I was stressed, exhausted, and strained by everything - to add salt to injury, I caught COVID just as I moved in and I had absolutely zero energy for anything.

For some context, I had lived with my parents for 27 years - the longest I’ve been away is just 6 weeks. I’ve been living in the same house for 26 years and I think I was not fully prepared for the toll that moving out would take on me.

Now that I’m settling in a teeny weeny bit better, I’ve been gathering my thoughts on the whole moving out/moving in process and wanted to share for anyone who’s about to go through the same:

✏️ Moving out into your own place always sounds exciting on paper, but the reality is less sexy haha. You suddenly have a whole place to maintain on your own and you gotta fix your own problems - no more relying on parents to help you when you have an ant infestation problem (touchwood!)

✏️ You’ll probably renovate your place to fit your lifestyle needs, but I can assure you that your life may be turned upside down just by moving into your new place. Nothing is quite the same and yet everything else in your life (work!) demands that you turn up as per usual - it’s highly disconcerting.

✏️ It’s easy to get swept up by the sea of change and get very lost, but I realise it really helps when there are certain non-negos in my life hat I have to stick to. E.g. I regularly eat overnight oats for breakfast and go for morning runs when I wfh - making sure I stick these somewhere in my new routine helps me feel grounded and a little more secure.

✏️ I’m very lucky that my partner (the delightful Tofu G!) has been reliable and hands-on. We complement each other and work well together to ensure that things get done around the house, and having him do the chores when I’m really too burned out by work has been a lifesaver.

✏️ I really didn’t like that things weren’t perfect - everyday I get the urge to keep the house looking perfect and it irked me that I didn’t unpack & organise my things fast enough, that there were chores left undone. Now I know that it’s ok to let things not be ok - after all it’s been less than a month since we moved in, and we have so many other things to work on.

While these are just my personal reflections, I do hope that they can help you if you’re also struggling with these as you’ve moving out of your house and into your new place 💖
