Hello 👋 there!

This post is dedicated to the street food I’ve tried in Taiwan during my Jan trip. There’s so much to try but we only have that much stomach space 😣 So I hope this post will help you make those calories worth!

📍Misty Dessert Kingdom Jiufen 米詩堤甜點王國九份門市

Saw this cream puff on IG and I knew I had to try it when I went to Jiufen. They have many flavours and we chose the taro one.

The puff has a crispy crust and OVERFLOWING filling so I say it’s a must try!

Rating: 4.5/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🤔 Would eat again?: YES! I would definitely want to try other flavours if I chance upon this shop again.

📍Raohe Night Market

(1) Fuzhou Pepper Buns - still as good as we remembered it to be. Juicy and peppery meat filling, it’s a must eat if you go to Raohe Night Market.

(2) Out&Back Fried Chicken - crispy cutlet, meat is juicy and seasoning on point! Overall a solid chicken cutlet!

(3) Sweet Potato Balls 劉家地瓜球 - this sweet potato balls is very “airy”, with a light crisp on the outside. The texture is somewhat different from the usual sweet potato balls. It is also seasoned with plum powder, making it even more special 😆

Rating: 4 /⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🤔 Would go again?: Raohe Night Market is relatively easy to reach and the food quality is overall pretty solid. I would go again for sure if I return to Taipei!

🗒️Tips: There’s a direct bus (1062) that brings you from Jiufen to Songshan so arrange to visit Raohe Night Market after Jiufen to save time!

📍Keelung Miaokou Night Market

This night market has quite a good variety of options. We tried mini grilled Taiwan sausage (smokey, juicy), mock fins soup, small Castella cakes and mee jiang kueh. Out of which, the mee jiang kueh (li ji, 李记面粉煎) was the most memorable. They were super generous with the peanut butter and one huge piece only cost NTW40! Please try it if you happen to be there.

Rating: 4.5 /⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🤔 Would go again?: Yes if I return to Keelung! There’s so much food options + prices are quite affordable. Not to forget that mee jiang kueh 🤤

📍Shilin Night Market

What we tried:

(1) “cow’s tongue” biscuit (牛舌饼) - flaky pastry with sweet milky filling; nothing too wow

(2) Hometown BBQ chicken - has a few stores at different night markets. They deep fry the chicken then dip it into their sauce and bbq it, giving it an additional layer of flavour. The coating remains crispy despite the sauce. Overall a good fried chicken!

(3) Deer’s flower cake - chewy glutinous base with yam/red bean filling + topping of small glutinous rice ball. Had to wait >30 mins because of the queue. Wasn’t super wow-ed by it + feel that it is a little expensive at NTW50 for a small cake. Personally, I think it’s ok to try if it’s a short wait, otherwise, can consider to skip.

(4) Grilled king oyster mushrooms - remember this being very popular on social media last time so decided to try it out. Honestly nothing too special; tastes as expected. Can try if Q is not too long because I didn’t see this anywhere else!

Rating: 3 /⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🤔 Would go again?: Shilin’s vibes feels a bit boring vs Raohe Night Market (seems mainly tourists there). The food didn’t look that attractive to me either so I probably won’t go again, esp since it’s a little out of the way 😞

📍J-Sweetie Nanmen Market

Nanmen Market is an air conditioned market selling groceries, dried goods and cooked food. Spotted locals queuing up for this crombolinis at basement level so we decided to join in 😆 Wide selection of flavours + looks AND tastes good + super affordable at around NTW50-60.

Rating: 4.5/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🤔 Would eat again?: Yes! These crombolinis are definitely worth the wait, esp considering the price point.
