HOW TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE REAL SILVER

Hallmark stamp

Look for a stamp on the inside of rings, earrings, bracelets, or chains. Silver that is less than 92.5% pure cannot be stamped 925 or sold as sterling silver

Weight test

Compare the weight of the silver to a similar-sized piece of known real silver. If they are similar, the silver is likely real

Acid test

A small shaving of silver can be placed in an acid solution to test its purity. If the color changes, the silver is not 92.5% pure

Ice cube test

Silver has the highest thermal conductivity of any common metal, so ice will melt quickly on it.

Magnet test

A magnet will not stick to genuine silver because it is nonmagnetic. If it does stick, it is likely fake.
