Cooking can feel a lot more intuitive and enjoyable if the kitchen is organized and well laid out. Here are some tips that helped us improve our kitchen organization.

1️⃣ Organize your kitchen by work zones

By defining zones in your kitchen, you can minimize unnecessary movement and save time during meal preparation.

Here are my 3 main work zones:

🔪 Prepping zone

This is where we keep everything that we need to prepare food: bowls, colander, seasonings, peeler, measuring spoons, baking pans etc.

Ideally, this zone should also include chopping boards and knives, but we couldn’t find a safe way to store them because of our open kitchen concept.

🔥 Cooking zone

This zone should be located near the cooker hobs. Items in this zone include cookware, serveware, cooking utensils, and seasonings.

💧Clean-up zone

Most likely this zone will be near the sink. Items in this zone include cleaning supplies, rubber gloves, paper towels, trash bags, etc

2️⃣ Create your kitchen work triangle

The idea of the “Kitchen Work Triangle” principle is to keep the cooker hob, refrigerator, and sink in a triangle, close to each other, so that you can move swiftly between these 3 areas.

Unfortunately, with our long kitchen design, it's geometrically impossible for us to achieve the Work Triangle. However, we took the concept and created our own knockoff triangle with an IKEA Skadis pegboard system.

We keep our most used utensils, kitchen timer, kitchen towel, cooking oil, frequently used garlic/onion, and some seasonings right behind us, so that we always have quick access to them when cooking.

Hope this can serve as a guide to help you organize your kitchen better. Feel free to adapt it to your own needs!
