Find your inner peace at Kamakura 🕊️

Kamakura (鎌倉) is a coastal town that’s about an hour train ride away from Tokyo. And this makes it perfect for a day trip!

🚊 Getting to Kamakura and travelling around

There are several ways to get to Kamakura:

1) Take the train from Shinagawa or Tokyo station to Kamakura station - which is about 45-60 min ride.

💰 Train fare is at ¥736 and ¥945 respectively*.

2) You can also take the train from Ikebukuro, Shinjuku or Shibuya station - which takes about 50 to 70 min.

💰 Fare is ¥945 across all stations*.

3) Alternatively, we took the train from Shinagawa station to Fujisawa station, which was nearer to the places we visited (below).

From either the Kamakura or Fujisawa station, you can then transfer to the Enoshima Electric Railway (Enoden in short) and ride your way around the hot spots!

📍Places/Things to check out

- Kamakurakokomae station

If you’re a fan of Slam Dunk, the photo spot appeared in one of the anime scenes I believe. It’s next to the beach and there are several restaurants around too, so you can hop off Enoden to spend some time here!

- Kotokuin Temple

Kotokuin Temple is where the giant Buddha resides. From Hase station, you’ll walk along a long stretch of restaurants, confectionery and souvenirs. They were mostly rated 4 stars and above on Google Maps. And being a red bean/anko lover, I got only the Nama Monaka Bentendo and Scone to try.

- Enoshima

Enoshima is a offshore island nearby Kamakura. Our cousin hiked all the way to the observatory tower and was greeted by a nice evening view. Or you could be like us who gave up halfway because of the strong and cold wind (we were there in early April) 😂

- Try shirasu!

Kamakura is famous for its shirasu (whitebait/juvenile white fish) so you’ll find them everywhere here! From don (rice bowl) to crackers and even croquettes, you’ll be spoiled with the variety of options.

Honestly, everything was perfect - from the food to the zen and chill vibes at this little town. We were already checking out apartments and imagining how retirement life would be here. So if you want a day off from all the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, do check out Kamakura!
