Road-tripping can be an incredible way to explore, but it has its challenges, especially when you’re the only driver! My wife and I have taken road trips in places like Japan, New Zealand, and Queensland, Australia. On nearly every trip, I’ve had close calls due to dozing off for just a split second.
In Japan, I drove into a big pile of snow
In New Zealand, I was seconds from veering off a cliff near a waterfall—thankfully, there was a metal barricade.
In Australia’s Queensland, I accidentally steered into oncoming traffic, with an Optimus prime truck headed right towards me.
So this time, I planned a road trip through Western Australia with stretches of 10-hour drives, I’m making extra efforts to stay alert. Here’s what’s helped me, and I hope it’ll make your road trips safer too:
1. Invest in quality sunglasses with UV protection. 😎
Bright sun can lead to squinting, which tires your eyes faster.
2. Chewing gum, coffee, or any pick-me-up. ☕ Bring whatever helps you stay awake!
3. Take frequent stops at petrol stations or towns. 😴
Even if you don’t feel tired, a 5- to 15-minute power nap can make a difference.
4. Keep your windshield clean. 🐝
High-speed drives can coat your windshield with bugs' gut, which can be hard to see through, especially with direct light.
5. Consider petrol over electric vehicles. 🚗
If you’re on a tight schedule and want to cover a lot of ground, petrol cars save time on refueling over charging.
If you made it this far, I hope you picked up a tip or two. Drive safe and enjoy your road trip!
