𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀?

One of the 7 Wonders of Oregon, these unique hills dot the landscape in a swath of reds, yellows, golds, and blacks, showcasing changes in climate during a particular geological time period. As different mineral and moisture content combinations occurred, they created these different layers of colors.

Pretty cool, right?!

You can easily 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗲𝘀:

▸ 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝗺 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹, a moderate 1.6-mile trail with impressive panoramic views

▸ 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹, an easy 0.5-mile trail that offers fantastic hill vistas

▸ 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹, an easy 0.25-mile trail that features a boardwalk through the vibrant colors

▸ 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗿 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹, an easy 0.25-mile t that leads to a tall, (you guessed it) red hill

▸ 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗳 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹, a 0.25-mile trail that explores a research site where many fossilized plants have been found

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄:

▸ 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗲-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲! While the Painted Hills is a NPS National Monument, no passes or fees are required.

▸ 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗲. During summer, it can get very hot. Bring sun protection and time your visit accordingly.

▸ 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀. This isn’t a major NPS site with full amenities. When you first arrive, you’ll see an Information Center where you’ll find the only bathroom in the unit. You’ll also find tables for lunch in one of the only shaded areas.

▸ 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘆. The nearby town of Mitchell has a handful of quaint options. Otherwise, you’ll want to consider dispersed camping on neighboring BLM land (our choice!)
