How HI saved me $3k of gynae visits when pregnant

If you’re pregnant or planning to conceive, please get your hospitalisation insurance sorted ASAP. Depending if you’re delivering at a private or public hospital, make sure your hospitalisation insurance can cover you adequately.

I didn’t know this before I was pregnant but hospitalisation insurance covers pregnancy complications. That means that if you get hospitalised for any of the included pregnancy complications - you can claim your hospitalisation insurance. This includes the hospitalisation fee and pre and post follow up visits with your gynae (which includes your regular checkups when pregnant)

📝 My experience

I was suddenly hospitalised after one of my gynae visits due to low birth weight of my baby. Back then I didn’t know that hospitalisation insurance covers pregnancy complications and was quite stressed about my hospital bill as my maternity insurance didn’t cover the complication. Even my insurance agent didn’t know it could be covered until I got home and read through my hospitalisation insurance policy carefully. Thankfully AIA integrated shield plan was recently updated in 2020 to cover 24 pregnancy complications and intrauterine growth restriction (low birth weight) was listed in the policy! I managed to claim my full hospitalisation fee and all my gynae visits 180 days before and after my hospitalisation (this covered almost all my gynae visits and scans 😅)

Hopefully you don’t get hospitalised, but it’s always good to be prepared for anything!
