Especially in the jewelry world.

It bums me out to see folks spending their hard earned money on a piece they love, and not even realizing that they’ve been sold a piece of plastic/resin/clay/reconstituted malachite that was labelled as genuine, natural malachite.

The more familiar you are with how natural malachite can look (because it’s quite variant), the easier it is to spot fakes.

Real malachite:

- Ranges from light green to dark green.

- What can appear to be hard lines are actually gradients.

- It can have more straight-ish lines, but often contains natural swirls, waves, and bullseyes.

- There are soft transitions between the shades of green.

- You’ll sometimes see small repair spots that patch up natural voids. This is because malachite is soft, and forms fibrous or botryoidal - so it doesn’t have the even surface of harder massive minerals like quartz.

- Even the darkest lines on natural malachite are actually just REALLY dark green, not black. It doesn’t naturally have black.

- Has some weight to it.

Now for the fakes:

- Harsh lines, no soft gradient transitions.

- Black lines (as opposed to really dark green).

- One-dimensional color.

- If it’s plastic, it’ll be lighter weight than natural malachite/stone. And not as cool to the touch as natural stone (more room temp).

- Oftentimes the hue of green will be slightly off (like a weird lime green, etc).

Another tell-tale is oftentimes the price. If you’re buying a malachite pendant for $2 and it seems to good to be true - it’s likely a fake. However, I’ve also seen fake malachite sold for real malachite prices by popular jewelry companies, so it’s safest to practice visually ID-ing .

Is this helpful? Are there other crystal fakes you’re worried about? 💚
