Curtains… they can make or break a room. We rent our home, and in our previous rentals I never gave much thought to window treatments. I would buy a cheap set and rod and call it a day. Over the past few years of designing our current home I’ve learned some valuable tips to hang them properly.
Tip 1: ALWAYS hang your curtains high and wide. My rule of thumb is At least 4-6 inches above the window/frame, if not to the ceiling. This gives the illusion of your ceilings being taller and helps frame the window out without covering any light coming in.
Tip 2: Choose the right length. I’m guilty of buying curtains that are too short and they always look a bit off in a room. You want them to lightly kiss the floor. We have 8 ft ceilings and once the rod is mounted by the ceiling I almost always choose 98” drapes.
Tip 3: Try bringing in color or pattern with curtains. In the nursery I went with Ikea Hannalil curtains in brown, they play nicely off the accent wallpaper and bring in a little more dimension.
Bonus tip: for bedrooms if you purchase curtains that aren’t black out, you can buy inexpensive curtain backing panels on Amazon. A must have for kids rooms!
