*Hearth Prep:

In Celtic traditions, the hearth was the heart of the home. As we approach winter, it's time to give it some TLC.

Cleaning: Begin with cleaning out old ash and ensuring your chimney is clean and safe.

Sacred Fire: Light the first fire of the season with oak or ash logs, and as you do, whisper your wishes for the upcoming winter months.

Sacred Fire: When lighting the first fire of the season, choose oak or ash logs, both of which are deeply rooted in Celtic lore. As the flames come to life, whisper your wishes and hopes for the upcoming winter months into the fire, allowing its warmth to carry your intentions.

Warmth Offerings: On certain nights, especially as we approach Samhain, leave a small offering by the hearth for any wandering spirits or fae folk.

If you don’t have a hearth, you can choose a spot to set up candles or a kerosene lamp for light to serve as the center, or you can clean and bless your kitchen stove.

* Herb Magic:

This is the perfect time to harvest and dry those lingering herbs in your garden.

Hanging Bundles: Create small bundles of herbs like rosemary, sage, or thyme, and hang them upside down in your kitchen or near the hearth. They'll imbue your home with a pleasant aroma and can be used in winter meals.

Protective Herb Pouches: Mix herbs known for protection – such as mugwort, rowan berries, and nettle. Place them in small pouches and hang them by windows or doors to safeguard your home.

*Ancestral Corner:

Honor your ancestors as the veil thins. Fall is a great time to set up a small area for ancestor worship. Even if you’re not a big altar person, the act of physically setting up a space can help you more quickly connect with your ancestors. I’m not exactly sure why, but it works!

Photo Display: Dedicate a corner or a table to photos and keepsakes of loved ones passed.

Offerings: Place a small bowl or plate in your ancestral corner and fill it with treats or trinkets your ancestors loved.

Offerings: Besides a small bowl or plate for treats, consider a cup for their favorite drink, be it tea, coffee, or a specific liquor. Changing or refilling the offerings occasionally helps keep the connection fresh and vibrant.

Candles: Light candles, preferably white or unscented, to help illuminate their path and guide their presence to your sacred space.

Scented Memories: If you remember a particular scent associated with an ancestor – maybe a favorite perfume, flower, or tobacco – try to source that scent. It could be in the form of incense, essential oil, or dried herbs. Scents are powerful memory triggers.

Heirlooms: If you possess any family heirlooms, such as jewelry, watches, or any artifact handed down, place them in this space. They carry the energy and history of your lineage.

Ritual Prayers: Create a simple prayer or chant that you recite when you approach this space, asking for guidance, sharing gratitude, or simply acknowledging their presence.

*Cleaning with Intent:

Fall is a great time to do a deep cleaning as you prepare for winter. Autumn symbolizes death, and rebirth, so you can remove the old to usher in the new.

Declutter: Now is the time to get rid of anything that doesn’t serve you. If an item holds dense or negative energy that you can’t shift, then it’s time to go!

Air Purification: Open all windows and doors for a brief period, allowing the old air to exit and the new to enter. As you do this, imagine stale, old energies leaving and a fresh start blowing in.

Sweeping Out the Old: Tie bundles of herbs (like rosemary or lavender) to your broom's bristles. As you sweep your floors, visualize sweeping away any negative energies.

Window Wipes: When cleaning your windows, imagine wiping away any obstacles in your path, allowing clarity to shine through. After all, the windows are the metaphorical eyes of your home.

*Doorway Protection:

The entrance of your home serves as both a welcome and a barrier. Fall is a great time to reinforce this boundary before the cold, dark months of winter.

Rowan Twigs: Create a small protective charm using twigs from a rowan tree, binding them into a star shape. Hang this by or on your front door to ward off unwanted energies.

Salted Pathways: Sprinkle a bit of salt at your doorstep to prevent negative energies from entering.

Bells: Bells have been used since ancient times for purification and protection. Their clear, ringing sound can dispel negativity and clear the air. Hang a small bell or a series of bells on your door or door frame. When the door is opened or closed, their chime will break any stagnant energy and keep your entranceway filled with positive vibes. Plus, they provide a lovely, welcoming sound for any guests arriving at your abode.

*Seasonal Scents:

Fall scents are my favorite, and infusing your home with specific scents that correlate with your intentions is a great way to do simple spell-work.

Simmer Pots: In a pot of boiling water, add apple slices, cinnamon sticks, and orange peels. Let it simmer and fill your home with the scents of the season.

Candle Crafting: Make or buy beeswax candles scented with essential oils like cinnamon, clove, or cedar wood.

Incense Blends: Fall is a wonderful time to experiment with different incense blends. Here are a few suggestions:

Autumn Leaves: Combine dried oak leaves, cedar tips, and a hint of pine resin. This blend connects you deeply with the energies of the forest.

Warm Spices: A mix of ground cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. It's not only fragrant but also very grounding, helping you center yourself during the transitional period of autumn.

Harvest Blend: Mix dried marigold petals, sage, and apple wood shavings. This blend is particularly useful for gratitude rituals or ceremonies.

Ancestral Whisper: A combination of rosemary, mugwort, and lavender. This blend can be used, especially as we approach Samhain, to strengthen your connection with the ancestral realm.

Pantry Stock-Up:

Just as the Celts prepared for winter, ensure your pantry is filled with essential, hearty goods. Think grains, dried fruits, and root vegetables. There’s a reason why the fall was known as the harvest. This is the time to collect food that will get you through the winter.
