why I don’t drink anymore

alcohol and Christianity typically aren’t included in the same sentence. alcohol is one of those topics many of us steer clear of because of judgment from others. in my opinion, ignoring this topic is way more harmful than speaking about it, so let’s talk about it!

if you knew me at ETSU or UTK, then you probably met me at a party of some sort, a Mexican restaurant, or a hangout at my and my friend’s apartment, etc. let’s face it: in college, we’re conditioned to feel that we can only make friends and hang out if alcohol is involved. so, yes, in undergrad, I was a drinker. no, I wasn’t an alcoholic, but I definitely acted in a way I now regret. now, I no longer choose to drink, but why? well, it stems from a heart change! as I became closer to God, I no longer wanted to be in those places, drink, etc.

in the Bible, we know that drunkenness is a sin, but drinking alcohol itself isn’t a sin. also, we need to understand that the statement “Jesus turned water to wine” as an excuse to get drunk is not okay or factual. let me explain! wine was considered a luxurious drink. it was often diluted and drank in moderation. not as a way to get drunk because that is a sin! so, why am I telling you this?

I am in no way sitting here and judging ANYONE who is drinking! I chose to stop drinking because of my convictions. as my relationship with God got stronger, the less I desired to participate in worldly things. I am a kingdom worker. I am a role model for others. I am an example of Christ. I know the weight I carry, and I know how important it is to take that role not only in the church but in my personal/private life. if you have had the conviction to stop drinking, let this be your sign to start! I fully support you and am rooting for you!!

”Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.“
