Foods you need to try in Taiwan

Taiwan has some of the best food in the world from juicy soup dumplings to sweet taro balls. I’ve compiled a list of my favorites, separated into main dishes, street market eats, and desserts.

Main Dishes:

* XIao Long Bao - juicy soup dumplings filled with pork and herbs

* Braised Beef Noodle Soup - tender cooked beef served in a flavor broth with chewy noodles

* Scallion Pancake - thin scallion pancake, often filled with egg and served with a sweet sauce

* Braised Pork Rice - tender pork shoulder and white rice with a tangy, sweet sauce

* Fish Ball Soup - minced pork covered in fish paste wrapped, served with broth and noodles

* Steamed buns - fluffy steamed buns filled with sweet or savory fillings

Street Market Eats:

* Taiwanese Fried Chicken - large pieces of thinly sliced fried chicken

* Fried squid - delicious fried squid with a variety of sauces

* Stinky tofu (not my fave but worth a try) - fermented tofu served with fermented veggies

* Steamed dumplings - steamed dumplings filled with meats or veggies

Desserts:

* Bubble (Boba) Tea - sweet milky tea served with tapioca bubbles or fruit jelly

* Glutinous Rice Cakes - green glutinous rice, or mochi, filled with fillings like dried shrimp, red bean, or fermented veggies

* Mango shaved ice - originally from Japan, this dessert consists of shaved ice topped with fresh fruit and ice cream

* Local donuts - make sure to try the maple sugar if you find it

* Peanut ice cream roll - fruity ice cream and shaved peanuts rolled up in a rice roll with cilantro

* Fried Sweet Potato Balls - deep fried sweet potato dough balls
