hello everyone!!! for today’s post, i would like to share my go-to book thrifting spots — these places are perfect for those who are okay with getting books that were pre-loved. i will also share the pros of book thrifting and which store/platform i prefer.

as many of you might know, i love reading. during the pandemic, i found my love for reading again and i actually started a bookstagram. reading has brought me lots of comfort and it has given me a form of escape from reality. buying books in singapore can be extremely pricey, with books ranging from $18 to $50. hence, when i have the urge to buy books and am on a budget, i usually check out these places:

01 books beyond borders

this second hand book thrift store is one of my favourite. tucked away in an industrial space, books beyond borders offers children books to adult fictions. to visit their physical store (the book barracks) on the weekends, you are required to rsvp and get a ticket for two at $5. i would say it’s worth it and it’s a really smart way to control the crowd especially since the space is on a smaller scale.

things i like:

⋆ the website is really easy to navigate and they have lots of options for the different genres

⋆ books are priced reasonably and the condition of the book is clearly stated

⋆ love that all profits from the book sales goes to rural classroom projects

⋆ books and barracks often has $1 book sales

⋆ lots of classics

⋆ books arranged on the bookshelves in books and barracks are neat and easy to navigate through

things i am not fond of:

⋆ most books sold are pretty dated, if you like current popular books, you might not be able to find any at books beyond borders (but if you are lucky you might find a copy that’s trending)

02 book market

book market offers clearance books at a much cheaper price and often the books are only slightly damaged or in good conditions. all their products are 100% authentic.

things i like:

⋆ the website is updated weekly — so you get to purchase new books every week

⋆ they have a bestsellers section and you can find popular books at a very discounted price

⋆ lots of self help/non-fiction books

things i am not fond of:

⋆ there are more children’s books than YA or adult fiction

⋆ book titles are mostly old and only a handful are books that produced in recent years

03 thryft bookstore

thryft bookstore is an online sustainable thrift store that is good for both your wallet and the environment. they often have pop-ups as well so do check their social media platforms for more updates.

things i like:

⋆ website is extremely easy to navigate

⋆ lots of book deals ranging from $3 onwards (depends on the conditions of the books as well as availability)

⋆ synopsis of books are also provided for each book

⋆ more than 10,000 book listings for you to choose from

⋆ credits from donated books, as well as an additional 1% of their profits, are donated to non-profit organizations and initiatives to help with efforts to address urgent environmental and social issues.

things i am not fond of:

⋆ not many adult fiction options

i hope this mini guide is of help if you are looking for places to thrift at — happy reading!!!
