MY REVIEW OF “Welcome to hyunam-dong bookshop”

I bought this as a gift for a loved one, but because she took so long to get to it, I decided to read it first :”) This novel came as a fresh breath of air. In it, you’ll find sincere commentaries on work, family, and individualism that are highly relevant today. I’m still taking my time with the book but I’ve been enjoying the light reflections contained in it.

Since this is a translated book, I was curious to see how the translated sentences would carry the sentiments of the specific stories. I admit there were a few moments where I thought to myself: oh, this phrasing seems slightly awkward. (Maybe I’m too used to a certain form of writing in the books I’ve been reading). However, since the Korean language is relatively new and foreign to me, I thought maybe this could be a way of representing the translation, and it was appropriate or even the best version at that moment.

I think language, even if it is a formally constructed system, is malleable and could take new and unique forms to be appreciated by different generations today.
