On the 4th of September, my teenage boy came to me saying he had a fever—37.5°C. I thought it was just a mild fever, so I told him to take Panadol and rest at home. The next morning, he said the fever was getting worse, so I took him to see a GP. The doctor told us it was a mild flu and prescribed him some medication. He took it and slept through the night.

But at 5 AM, things took a terrifying turn. He went to the bathroom and didn’t come back. When I went to check on him, I found him lying on the floor in the dark. That’s when the nightmare began.

His older sister and I struggled to get him into the car, and I rushed him to the A&E immediately. I dropped him off at the entrance while I went to park the car. When I came back, I was pushed towards the resuscitation room but was told to wait outside.

My heart nearly stopped.

What was happening?

Why was I being questioned by different doctors every 15 minutes.

Finally, they told me they suspected a bacterial infection attacking his kidney, liver, heart, and even his brain. My world came crashing down in that instant.

How could this happen? He only had a fever! 😭😭😭

After six agonizing hours, they arranged for an ambulance to transfer him to KKH since he was under 16.

I drove to KKH, but as soon as I arrived, I was thrown into another nightmare. Once again, we were rushed straight to the ER. I found myself standing in a scene out of a drama—a dozen doctors surrounding my boy, lying there helplessly.

Words can’t describe the fear I felt at that moment.

I texted my two daughters to come down quickly. I was terrified.

My boy was admitted to the ICU, hooked up to countless drips and antibiotics. They ran an endless series of tests and scans.

For three days, we were left in confusion, grasping for answers… until finally, the results came in.
