Here are my go-to additions to my morning drink for better health & focus throughout the day -
First, what I have in the morning depends on the stage of my cycle.
In the follicular phase (first 2 weeks of my cycle) I tolerate caffeine well and naturally have more energy, so I usually brew a half & half regular coffee + decaf brew. I’m super mindful of my caffeine intake as a whole because I can get jittery and anxious really easily.
When I have caffeine, I add a teaspoon of Kerrygold irish butter (or coconut oil, I often rotate these). This blended with coffee helps me digest the coffee much more slowly which prevents sharp spikes & big crashes in energy. High quality butter also contains butyric acid which helps rebuild the gut lining.
When I don’t have caffeine, I choose organic raw cacao powder which is yummy and energizing without the big spikes. I choose this or herbal team in the luteal phase of my cycle (the second two weeks before my period starts).
WIth either option, I add quality collagen peptides (I rotate the marine & bovine collagen) and functional mushrooms mix (lion’s mane, reishi, chaga, etc). I think of the collagen as a long term anti-aging solution or my skin & joints, and the functional mushrooms help me sleep better, and stay more focused throughout the day. Reishi is also amazing for managing stress better.
Overall - I look for rotation & variety in everything I eat and drink to get plenty of different nutrients throughout the month.
