Famous stuffed toast in Hualien, Taiwan 🍞🇹🇼

If you have been to Taiwan before, you might’ve come across or tried these famous loaded toasts in their markets or food stalls. This stall is situated in a corner of Zhiqiang Night Market of Hualien.

Directly translated to Coffin Toast, this name is derived from a hollowed-out bread that resembles a coffin. The thick toast is usually filled with a variety of ingredients ranging from meat, vegetables, seafood and before being toasted to a beautiful golden brown.

I got to try the Three-cup Chicken and Black Pepper Beef variations, where I enjoyed both very much. The combination of sweet and savoury flavours in the three-cup chicken was wonderful, while you’ll get a strong peppery flavour profile in the black pepper beef toast. The highlight of both is undoubtedly the bread that is light and airy despite being buttered and toasted. While it may sound surfeiting, this is a sandwich that lives in my heart rent-free from the very time I had it.

This is a perfect tea-time snack, or even break/lunch/dinner for light eaters.

I’d definitely return to try more variations once the borders ease.
